Punishment doesn’t deter crime. It never has. What makes you think it would do so in a tribal society?

Well I would disagree with that. You don't think there would be a lot more crime if the punishments currently in place, were not in place?

Bringing back widespread tribal societies would be a good start.

No, I don’t. And if you think about it for a moment (which would be a novel experience for you), you don’t, either.

I don't think the current system is perfect, but I would much rather have this system than not.

Raising children is very hard work, and most of the burden falls on the mother. The more offspring, the less of her own life she gets to live.

Is the mother's "own" life really that important, as long as she is raising children?
Substitute the phrase "the father's 'own' life" in that sentence. How does it sound now?
Of course the woman's own life is important. If someone had told me at age 14 that I could either be an artist or a mother but not both, I would never have gotten into an intimate relationship with a man and I'd be childless.
Fortunately I was able to raise my daughter - who is also an artist and who has chosen to be child-free - and then I focused my attention on music, writing and other things that interest me.

The point of criminal law isn’t to reduce crime (it never has been), but to sequester criminals from the general public and to raise money. THAT’S the system.

It's for both reasons.

Well, I must say, being a mother is a lot more important than being an artist. Making art is a hobby, while being a mother is a duty.
