Windows Crazy Shit
May 15, 2024 at 10:23 pm
OK, it's tough enough for me to find out how to stop the minor shit with windows. I'm getting weather and sports on my screen, the one before I log in. I don't seem to be able to figure out how to get that shit off. I didn't ask for it, I guess it appeared with an update. How do I get back to a blank screen? I care not one whit for sports or weather.

Just wait, in no time you'll have ads on the desktop.

If non removable ads appear I will move 100% to Linux 😈

I did this recently (specifically because the weather wasn't updating), and here's how I went about it:
1) Right-Click on the taskbar.
2) Click on the "News and Interest" option. It should show a set of options like "Show Icon and Text", "Show Icon Only", and "Turn Off."
3) Choose "Turn Off."

If you are interested in Linux, what I recommend is to use applications that are cross platform:
Chromium or Firefox.
LibreOffice (for word processing, spreadsheet, etc.)
ThunderBird (for mail)
VLC (for playing videos)
Qt Creator (for C++ programming)
Shotcut (for video editing)
Steam (some sort of an app store to buy games).
Once you move to Linux, install the same apps and you already know how to use them.
For the distro, I recommend a popular distro and it is better to try a couple and see which one you like. This is a matter of personal taste.
I'll second all this, and add that Ubuntu and it's forks (Kubuntu. Lubuntu, Mint, etc...) seem to be the easiest for Windoze users who are new to Linux to get acquainted with.

I have been dual booting windoze 10 and linux mint for a few years, settled on Libre office and Brave browser on both (removes Youtube ads nicely) wondering about wine or maybe a VM for the odd win programs that don't have an alternative.
I did try a win 11 install (using Rufus to burn an install usb removing the TPM requirement) but while it worked, it was painfully slow on my ageing core I5 system

Did you turn the system off and then back on?

My main desktop is technically a dual boot machine, but I've only booted it into Windoze once in the last three months or so. I have a little Borg cube mini PC running Windoze 11 that I use to remote in to work and run AutoCAD on. For personal computing (and any work related stuff like Google docs, etc... that doesn't require I be in Windoze) I remain in the Linux sphere almost exclusively these days.
