The Heretic Movie
November 13, 2024 at 12:06 pm
Just watched the Heretic movie last night and found it quite enjoyable. Sure, there were the usual holes and generalizations, but there aren't many horror movies that strike a good balance with intelligent dialogue to keep audiences entertained without either too much pandering or too much flying overhead. I thought it was done well enough here and the creators have said they'd like to do more, so I look forward to that that.
I'm not even sure I'd call it a horror movie though....maybe psychological thriller with religious subject matter?
Also, as a musicologist, I enjoyed that aspect and clever end credits song immensely.
Anyone seen it? Was the ending satisfying enough for you or could be better?
It will all be over soon...

I'm interested but haven't seen it yet. I've heard the LDS folks are condemning it as encouraging violence against missionaries.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

I was wondering when the protests would begin, but using their argument wouldn't ANY violent movie be encouraging violence against someone? It just happens to be Mormons in this case...

Unless Sophie Thatcher’s gonna flop ‘em out, I have no interest.

Misread that as LSD, never mind.

I also watched this movie. It is an atheism-religion discourse made as a psychological horror where some sort of atheist talks to door-knocking Mormons.
The movie has a caveat that he requested from the Church of Mormons for missionaries to come by, but who the fuck does that? They obviously didn't want to put Mormons on the spot of being intrusive, which they are in reality, so this tells you a lot about the movie.
The main argument of the atheist is that all religions are copies of each other, an argument that then takes other forms.
But then it also turns out that the atheist is not quite an atheist since he also has beliefs that cannot be proven.
On the positive side, the movie is kind of intellectual for a horror movie, but that genre still seems to be limiting for this kind of discourse. The best movies that are about religion vs atheism discourse are still by Luis Buñuel.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I think it had to be dumbed down to a certain extent for American audiences and they struck a good balance for a showing in mainstream theaters. They do want to ultimately sell tickets, after all.

Yeah, it is good as a horror movie.
Although, maybe it would have been more interesting if Grant's character was god trying to persuade a couple of Mormons that their god was false and that he's the real god.

I briefly thought that might be the case when he purposely wanted them to stop by....
On a side note, I read that for the premiere they pumped in the scent of blueberry pie during the candle scene. Adds a nice creative layer to the suspense for the audience. Kudos to them for trying something different, at least

It’s actually neither new nor different. Using scent to highlight various aspects of a movie dates back to silent film era. It was used in live theatre as early as the 1860s.
