The song is about the loss of childhood innocence which is just the kind of thing folk songs address. The child molestation thing is definitely darker. He seemed repented and even Jimmy Carter gave him a pardon. That doesn't excuse him but we are all imperfect. I'm willing to give him a pass. Not that I am qualified as a moral arbiter. It's just my gut feeling that this was a guy who's slate was relatively clean at the end. He wasn't a saint but few if any of us are.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
