If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

I'm reminded of the reforms passed in the wake of Nixon's Watergate scandal, as well as the recent history of the Biden administration. If the crisis passes, it's hard to believe there will be significant permanent changes.

It's harder to get 535 people onto one bandwagon than it is to get one driver barreling pell-mell down the road.

You only need half that number. Still a hard row to hoe, though.

I do rather like the fact that some in Congress are trying to claw back the tariff authority.

The "world"??
You mean Europe?

South America is in tatters due to CIA involvement.
Africa... well... that's mostly Europe's fault.
Asia/China/India, they don't care that much.
Australia.... oh, there's another friend.

We had good working partnerships throughout the world.

I think Thump’s point is that US relations were better (if somewhat tense) with all the areas you mention than they are now. They were more willing to accept the soft power the US wielded - more adroitly than not - than they were to accept the same from Russia. This acceptance necessarily created a measure of trust.

This is no longer the case. Love the US or hate it - and a case could be made for both - it can’t be sensibly denied that American influence engendered a certain measure of stability, particularly in Africa and Asia.

Amazing story in the NYT (paywall, sorry) about an attempted kidnapping, a $250 Million heist, the procedurals of the investigation, the baddies' big mistake, teenage millionaires driving lambos and fanning hundos at a chic bar, and the capture. Reads like a summer blockbuster.

It started with Minecraft.
