VANCOUVER, British Columbia — At least nine people were killed when a man drove into a crowd at a Filipino heritage festival in the Canadian city of Vancouver, and an unknown number were injured, police said Sunday.

“The person we have in custody does have a significant history of interactions with police and health care professionals related to mental health," he said.

Video of the aftermath shows the dead and injured along a narrow street in South Vancouver lined by food trucks. The front of the driver's SUV is smashed in.

Kris Pangilinan, who brought his pop-up clothing and lifestyle booth to the festival, saw the vehicle enter past the barricade slowly before the driver slammed on the gas in an area that was packed with people after a concert. He said hearing the sounds of bodies hitting the vehicle will never leave his mind.

"He sideswiped someone on his right side and I was like, ‘Oh, yo yo.’ And then he slammed on the gas,” he said. “And the sound of the acceleration, it sounds like an F1 car about to start a race.

"He slammed on the gas, barreled through the crowd. And all I can remember is seeing bodies flying up in the air higher than the food trucks themselves and landing on the ground and people yelling and screaming. It looked like a bowling ball hitting hitting bowling pins and all the pins are flying into the air.”

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has officially classified the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a “proven right-wing extremist organization,” marking the most serious step yet in Berlin’s efforts to contain the rising political force.

The move, announced Friday by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), means that the AfD is no longer merely under suspicion. The agency says it now has definitive evidence that the party works against Germany’s democratic system.

The new classification doesn’t ban the party, but it allows German authorities to intensify surveillance, including the use of undercover informants and monitoring communications, under judicial oversight.

It also raises the political stakes as establishment parties will face growing pressure to rule out cooperation with the AfD at any level of government.

The decision could fuel calls for a formal party ban, though that would require approval from Germany’s top constitutional court and backing from the national government or parliament— an uphill legal and political battle.

I hope that it will end in ban. There is no reason for allowing extremist organizations to work legally and enjoying law protection when the same organization seek to undermine state.

This wont help, at all. The AfD will only play its "persecution" card even harder and attract even MORE voters. Current polls indicate that the AfD is now the party with the MOST votes if next Sunday was election.

I have read the press release of the "Bundesamt für Verfasungsschutz" (Agency for Protection of the Constitution), and the central point was: Key AfD figures, and thus the AfD as a whole, propagates Ethno Nationalism, which is unconstitutional, because it puts "Germans with migration background (the PC description of German nationals with non german ethnicity) at a systematic disadvantage with regard to either acquiring or keeping german citizenship.

It's possible I guess but capitulating before extremists cause of fear of them screaming about persecution would be a failure of the state. It would show that everything goes at least if you can scream loud about law "persecuting" you.

So let me rephrase: This ALONE wont help, but rather hurt. Its a necessary first step in the fight against the AfD. The fight now needs to be continued.
