Apocalypticism is a remarkable entry in the history of ideas. It has persisted for millennia, constantly adapting to fit the times and local circumstances. It has proved to be a potent export, able to cross geographical and cultural boundaries. It may be almost as popular today as it has ever been. And it’s done all of this despite the fact that its predictions have an absolute 100 per cent failure rate.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
That a monster kills someone doesn't mean s/he dislikes the victim. It just means s/he considers the victim to be of equal opportunity.

Each morning, I spread birdseed and peanuts out on our front sidewalk for the birds. I attract sparrows, starlings, mourning doves, robins, cardinals, cowbirds, house finches, and grackles, plus a few squirrels. Unfortunately, the grackles have started attacking and eating the sparrows.
"positivity and optimism" is a philosophy for stupid people. Not that people like Joel Osteen and Tony Robbins are stupid. Far from it. But the positivity/optimism stuff is incredibly bland; it is ineffectual at best, and misleading at worst.

I would absolutely take a bullet for my wife. And I would absolutely know that she was the reason we were being shot at.

I haven't always been insecure about my size, but when I asked my girlfriend if she liked it, and she said to me, "It's not horrible", that was pretty much the end of that.
