Professor Tolkien once said something along the lines that pleasant days and happy events are not something people especially want to read about, but things that are terrifying make for gripping scenes in a novel (he was being asked about the narrative pacing in LOTR).

Also, fighting the "good" fight tends to be a fantasy of the young who think they can accomplish what thousands of years of civilization has never managed. Unfortunately, as we age, we realize that there is no end to the fight. We either persist futilely until our dying breath or we choose to focus on other aspects of life that are more self-fullfilling.
