And yet rural voters overwhelmingly vote Republican in an attempt to Make America Great Again, ostensibly to recapture a golden age when things were good.
Then allow me to correct myself in stating that we're all self-deluded to some degree.

Option #2.
Professor Tolkien once said something along the lines that pleasant days and happy events are not something people especially want to read about, but things that are terrifying make for gripping scenes in a novel (he was being asked about the narrative pacing in LOTR).

Also, fighting the "good" fight tends to be a fantasy of the young who think they can accomplish what thousands of years of civilization has never managed. Unfortunately, as we age, we realize that there is no end to the fight. We either persist futilely until our dying breath or we choose to focus on other aspects of life that are more self-fullfilling.

It's why I write. It's the only way for me to reconcile my disdain for a society that never learns.

Why is it that when I get a song stuck in my head, it's always a song I hate?

I don't know. I've had several songs stuck in my head lately, but they're songs that I like.

There's an amazing circle jerk on X right now. MSNBC showed a video of an aerial shot of the No Kings rally in Boston. Some moron using Grok, Wikipedia, and reverse image search convinced themselves that the video was from 2017. So he proposed a community note, which, AFAICT, hasn't been approved. So now right-wingers at every level of the food chain on X are reposting the claim and raging about how the mainstream media lies, even though at present these are just unproven claims, and even Grok is saying that they're false. Never let a pesky thing like facts, fact-checking, or sources get in the way of a good story.
