teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I am more and more convinced over time that the popularity of the God concept derives from our evolutionary psychology, which is ironic.
"This world was made for us, we are important to and guided by the most powerful being, we will live eternally" and so on. Very self-serving stuff.

The real reason the country is in debt:
They're wasting money shipping packages all around the country instead of just shipping directly.

It’s been said - with some justification, I think - that the threshold of emotional maturity is the acceptance of one’s own mortality. In that sense, belief in an eternal afterlife is a juvenile fantasy.

People who believe in eternal life -- and there are a lot who still do -- are largely driven by their desires and emotions rather than by reason. All of the evidence is against it.
They need to work on their intellectual lives.
And religious leadership is militating against that.

When business comes at the cost of an unfair economy, you need to rethink the business model.

My oldest granddaughter is doing internships at a safe house for women escaping from domestic violence and also a facility for children removed from unsafe situations to stay till they are either taken in by other family or foster families. She was home this weekend so I went through my stash of quilts and sent her about eight back so that some of the ladies and kids and pick out a quilt to keep as their own. I had originally thought of taking them to a nursing home, but this is better.
She was so excited to be bringing in donations for the people she is working with.
