Well, they could have known just like they can today: they could see that these people were suffering. Indeed, there were some people, or should I say organizations, in the United States who would buy slaves or obtain them in different ways and then free them and send them back to Africa.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

But they (the Church) didn’t view enslaved people as ‘people’ - that’s a fairly recent development. It’s a repugnant point of view to us, but in the period under discussion in Leo’s apology, it was not only Church policy but a moral certainty that non-Christians were sub-human and had no more rights than cattle or sheep. What about an inference from classical times when even Jews were enslaved. It sounds like you're saying the church had no counterexamples, but they did. ![]() (Yesterday at 2:27 pm)Angrboda Wrote:(Yesterday at 1:51 pm)BrianSoddingBoru4 Wrote: But they (the Church) didn’t view enslaved people as ‘people’ - that’s a fairly recent development. I believe Jews fall into the category of non-Christians. The point is that societies which practiced slavery did not view slavery as immoral. Boru

The church thought they were suitable for conversion, so there's an obvious inconsistency in writing them off as subhuman. ![]() (Yesterday at 4:48 pm)Angrboda Wrote:(Yesterday at 3:35 pm)BrianSoddingBoru4 Wrote: I believe Jews fall into the category of non-Christians. "Maybe if I believe enough , I will have super powers like those characters in the Bible"
Watch video: African pastor tried to part the sea like Prophet Moses, what happened next left his followers stunned Dressed in a white robe, pastor asked his followers to keep reading from the Holy Bible as he ventured into the sea with a stick in his hand. In the clip, he ran towards the incoming waves while one of his followers read the Bible verses bent on his knees. However, soon, the pastor turned around and tried running back to safety as the waves crashed over him. In the end, he abandoned the attempt and fled in fear.
