Does Atheism Need to be Rebranded?

RE: Does Atheism Need to be Rebranded?
All of the nasty shit we don't like about ourselves is a product of our minds Shell. To use this sort of metric to measure what we can or can't be "anti" about isn't going to leave us with much. Bigotry? "How can you be against bigotry but not against bigots?"

It's possible in the same way that being against bigotry without being against bigots themselves is possible. One can cease to be a bigot, one can cease spouting, believing in, or attempting to justify disgusting religious bullshit. It's not something that I feel that I can force other people to do, but I can help them along.

Religion has been reforming since the very beginning, it doesn't seem to help much, and reformation has historically not been a very peaceful process. There are a few key things built into every religion that amount to a recipe for absolute disaster. Even the pacifists. I can make this easy to understand, at least my particular brand of anti-theism.

-There are no gods, not in the sense that we use the word or term when we invoke it from a religious standpoint.
-There is nothing here to "disprove", it is not philosophy, it's not even lofty or spiritual, religion is simply an excuse for some other thing.
-At it's absolute best it is benign but largely ignorant (and ignorant is bad enough, our ability to think and reason being the defining characteristic and saving grace of our species), at it's worst it is malevolent and absolutely calculating.
-It doesn't work now, it's never worked, case in point it's done a hell of alot of harm to us.
-We know better than to believe in fairies, so why are we still going through this song and dance?

-Those that espouse hateful/ignorant/absurd religious beliefs are assholes (and I don't actually think that this has always been the case, I don't begrudge my paleolithic ancestors for their lack of understanding-though I would fault them for the hateful bits all the same).
-Those that profess belief sans the disgusting shit are enablers (at the very least).

We'd be doing ourselves one hell of a favor if we just dropped this shit like a ton of bricks. If that's going to happen, I'd prefer that it happened soon, and I don't mind being the guy who smashes my head against that wall (and helps others smash their heads against that wall) until a good idea falls out. Theism, and honestly, deities of any stripe (and all their attendant attributes and claims) are, to me, simply the shittiest ideas we've ever had.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

So, you would just prefer there weren't religion, in a nutshell?

I'm conflicted. We got some great stories out of the deal, and stories are near and dear to me. Going forward from this point, yeah. If I had the power to blanket the distant past I don't know, I'd probably be selective with my power..lol.

Also we'd have a lot less deaths in the past. Which has the unfortunate consequence of boosting our already outrageous population.
This is stupid

"Rebranding", huh?
Atheism is the name of our unwillingness to conform to the belief of the supernatural without reason or evidence in the face of sometimes fanatical and tenacious opposition.
The world is full of compromises that we must sometimes make, who we are and what we stand for must never be one of them. To do so would be an affront to the very thing we pursue throughout our lives:
Truth.

"Rebranding"? Sorry, I don't do hiding.
They can shove it up their lily white asses

I think we should embrace the word Atheism and all the connotations that come with it. Theists should fear us, as we represent that of which they are afraid.

Rebrand Atheism?

Consider it for a moment. How on earth is it a BRAND at all. It is simply a descent from the greek atheos. Denying the existence of God..
Why don't we rebrand the word physicist because they are considered "nerdy".

To pick up on the point, is that regardless of the connotations that come with it, any rebrand, and new word to describe not believing in the existence of God, is to create the illusion that atheism is equivalent to a religion as Christianity is to Theism. Next you'll have to rebrand the different views atheists have, the Libertarian "Brights" and the Humanist Agnostic Atheist and we are divided.

We are atheist. We are joined by only one simple idea. A supreme supernatural creator is almost certainly a falsehood. Its a single banner that unites us all. Start creating labels, and you create divisions, and we are weakened as a statement of truth.
Self-authenticating private evidence is useless, because it is indistinguishable from the illusion of it. ― Kel, Kelosophy Blog

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?
The f**king janitor or the dude who runs the waterslide. Throughout history every mystery. Ever solved has turned out to be. Not Magic.

At the OP... no.
No offense intended to any black people, as I'm not racist at all. I still don't intend for atheism to end up like the African American Civil Rights Movement, with our name changed every ten years to avoid being offended. We're atheists, and we'll stay atheists. No need to call us "Anti-deity Oriented" or anything ridiculous like that to stay politically correct.

Personally, the fact that the word 'atheist' causes bile to rise into the throat of most Americans is more of a pro to me than a con.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
