are clothes moral?
#11
RE: are clothes moral?
I feel no sort of moral connection to clothing, however, in every day life, I do dress pretty modestly. I have to do so just so people will take me seriously. If I wear something remotely low cut, my green eyes go unnoticed by hetero males, and I'm given dirty looks from females. I'm not interested in that at all, especially if there's no money in it.

I suppose you could say I am forced into wearing clothes by my own greed and by a society full of babies and perverts.

Perhaps I would if I hadn't been conditioned for years to be embarrassed of my own body. Given that I know it's irrational though maybe I'd be able to overcome that with relative ease. The reason I don't try now is because of the heavy social stigma as well as the fact that it's illegal. At home I often walk around nude if temperature permits. Do I think wearing clothes is a moral decision? Well, I guess it depends on what values you assume; to me it has nothing to do with morality.

As you highlight here clothing is useful in a protective role. It's useful for combating cold temperature as was also pointed out. It assists with hygiene too; if someone sits on a vinyl couch on a hot day and is sweating their ass off (or on their period) that's probably going to leave a bit of a mess. Then there's comfort, which bras and jocks can serve. And, of course, fashion.

Only xtians could propagate sex taboos for centuries upon centuries upon their culture, deeply ingraining them into society... and then claim that it must be a moral absolute because "everyone" does it.

It doesn't take much to look at societies untouched by guilt obsessed religions to see nudity is not an issue.

Wankers.

PS Movies have got it wrong, future clothing isn't all bright colours and zany angles.. its less and less clothes...

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?

And boobs are just baby feeders. lol

I understand, that's why at school/work I keep them hidden as much as possible. It's not moral, it's a strategy.

side note: i found out that san francisco allows you to be naked in public as long as you place a barrier between your naked ass and the bus seat. i had no idea. they really let you ... be you ... in san fran i guess. hahaha.

ok, so does anyone care to partake? would any of you go naked if it were legal where you live? also, less importantly, do you think wearing clothing is a moral decision?

Well, I don't think that I'd use the term "moral" but I believe that decency and modesty both in clothing and in mind, is an important thing.
For a wise man once said;"Dress as you are, or be as you dress."
For I believe that what you choose to wear outside is indeed a part of you, it defines you, or you define it.
So yes, it can also be a standard of morality if you want it to be.
