Women in the Military More Likely to Be Traumatized by Sexual Assault Than Combat

RE: Women in the Military More Likely to Be Traumatized by Sexual Assault Than Combat
It's not because of how we think about sex. It is because of what sex is and the possible consequences of it.

Shoving a broomstick up someone's ass is not rape. It is sexual assault, but not rape.

Well, they're both class A felonies in Oregon.

1) Is anal rape--penile penetration of the anus--not "rape"?
2) Is anal rape with an object that isn't a penis significantly different than anal rape with a penis?
3) If the rapist is a trangendered female, or a male who is otherwise sterile/incapable of transmitting sexual fluids, is penile rape not "rape", or somehow less "rape" than if the rapist were capable of reproduction / transmission of sexual fluids?

The consequence in most cases fall far short of anything comparable to death.

My father threatened to kill me and my family with a shotgun when I was 3. I was molested when I was 5. I was raped when I was 16. What I find most traumatic of these experiences and others is the minimization of the trauma.
I've been in enough group therapy to be able to report that many rape survivors wish they had been killed instead of having to live through the psychological fallout. Rape victims have a higher rate of suicide than the average population, though I don't know how it compares to the suicide rate of those who have suffered from facing the possibility of their own death. To suggest that rape survivors' pain and trauma is somehow less than someone who has faced death is insensitive.
As I said earlier, trauma is relative. I've met people who have suffered comparatively less trauma, but have significantly more psychological problems than myself. I have also met people who have suffered more trauma, and are much healthier than myself. How well or how poorly one copes with traumatic events is highly individual, and often dependent upon what kind of support is available to the victim.

It is rape.

Yes.

No.

Most definitely. It is still very different from getting hit in the face. Of course, there are also cases where death is a consequence of rape. Where HIV is epidemic, it's almost a given that areas with high incidences of rape will also have high incidences of HIV, but we're digressing a bit. A sexual assault is different than an assault, just as it is different than death.

Some people do not recover from rape. For some people, it is a terrible fate more long and drawn out than death. Some people are strong enough to pick themselves up and move on. Either way, there is no doubt that sexual trauma can cause significant emotional, behavioral and developmental disorders.

Still, I agree that death and rape are not equal.

No.

So what is it about a penis that makes it worse than, say, a realistic dildo/strap-on?

Contact, for one. Some people, like myself, are averse to physical contact from most people.

Secondly, the potential for spread of disease is far greater with actual penetration.

Might I ask why this is important to the topic at hand?

Because it seems odd to me to distinguish between sexual penetrations based on the material of the object that is penetrating your vagina/anus.

The spread of disease can't be it, because rape isn't all that meaningfully less traumatic if the victim knows that the rapist is disease-free.

Aversion to physical contact with skin, though? It matters if he wears a condom? It matters if he rapes you with a prosthetic penis? It matters if he rapes you with a prosthetic penis in a condom?

I didn't think this could be so complicated.

Really? I'm not saying it is ridiculously less traumatic. I am saying it is not rape. If you don't use your sexual organs, it is not rape, as it is not sex.

Quote:The spread of disease can't be it, because rape isn't all that meaningfully less traumatic if the victim knows that the rapist is disease-free.

It would be for me. I would still be traumatized, but not knowing for six or more months if I was going to die from an STD is extremely traumatic. I'll give you that it is probably different for people with OCD, but I still imagine that knowing you're not going to catch anything awful or get pregnant alleviates a lot of the shame and fear that comes immediately after rape.

Yes.

No. Have you ever had sex with a condom on? Skin still touches, dude.

Are you seriously this hung up on it? Again, what does this have to do with the conversation at hand. Rape is rape. All sexual assault is not rape. Fingering someone is not rape. I didn't define rape. All you have to do is Google it. I'm not sure why you need my help with it.
