Ah, we have one of those here in Portugal... Been there, done that... and yes, it's creepy.

I guess the church (under which people were buried - there were no cemeteries) just ran out of space to put dead people, so they... err... refurbished.

As for the relics, I guess they mostly arise due to people desiring to be close to actual saints, or something like that. Hoping some of that sanctity rubs on to them. People are weird.

Plague cathedrals, gorgeous.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Most old churches have an Ossuary to store bones. Because christians believed at the second coming the dead would arise in the flesh from their bones.
And you thought Zombie Jesus was a joke!

Nail (relic)

Very little reliance can be placed upon the authenticity of the thirty or more holy nails which are still venerated, or which have been venerated until recent times, in such treasuries as that of Santa Croce in Rome, or those of Venice, Aachen, Escurial, Nuremberg, Prague, etc. Probably the majority began by professing to be facsimiles which had touched or contained filings from some other nail whose claim was more ancient. It is conceivable that imitations in this way may have come in a very brief space of time to be reputed originals.
Bolding mine

Well, a lot of faith is already required to be religious, why not just make the delusion that much more obvious? They could all be real, I mean, with god anything is possible, right? Facepalm

I still haven't found specific verses, but I did come across this:
http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/l...recnum=645
Quote:"You can't store Grandma on the mantel or scatter your father's ashes across the 13th green of his favorite golf course," advises Father Peter Polando, canon lawyer and pastor of St. Matthias Parish in Youngstown, Ohio. "The Church has strong feelings about the fact that this body has been a temple of the Holy Spirit and requires a proper burial as a result."
