I'm sure your fantasies look like those sick & cold future worlds like the ones in " minority report " or "aliens" !

Yeah, any atheist has said anything even remotely close to that that, ever.

Quote:Given the recent & current history of the soviet union & north korea, that's a painfully ironic accusation.

Neither of which ever marched a single step with the specific aim of advancing atheism. Nice try, though.

"Let's fly a plane into a skyscraper" said no atheist, ever.
"Deat to those who insult Darwin" said no atheist, ever.

Chess players disagree.

You don't play chess, I take it? Until the later stages are reached, when the options are more limited, the game could almost have been what Field Marshall von Moltke had in mind when he said "No battle plan survives contact with the enemy."
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Islamic hell is a literal fire and brimstone kind of place where you physically burn in real fire and your flesh regenerates during the process. Without flesh/nerve endings you wouldn't feel the pain of course. God/Allah sends people there who have displeased him for whatever reason, say they denied his very existence. Christians have developed a more palatable version of hell which is a separation from God and a burning of anguish from the weight of your unforgiven sins and so on. The Muslim hell is described in the Quran in some detail, it also describes what heaven will be like and what you will get while you're there. Jews didn't have much of a concept of hell or an afterlife in general. There is mention of Sheol or the pit but that's the just the ground, you're burried in that and God has finished with you. They developed various beliefs in the afterlife later on but it was never really uniform.

The christian hell is just as much fire and brimstone.

Matthew:
Quote:13:49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
13:50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Revelations:

Quote:14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
14:11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Quote:20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

You see you're reading these passages as being literal and matter of fact while Jesus liked to speak in metaphorical parables to describe truths that lay beyond human understanding you see. It's like the parable of the Rich Man Lazarus.

http://www.tentmaker.org/books/abrahams_bosom.html

Christians have watered down the doctrine of hell in the last 100 years because they have come to realise the traditional fire and brimstone hell has little appeal these days. So now it's a mystical kind of thing and a self inflicted torment through separating yourself from Gods loving presence. There's no actual fire or physical burning involved. Jesus describes hell as the "outer darkness" at point so you can't really have darkness and fire together. Something to bear in mind should you encounter a Christian who has upped their game, they will say you're attacking a stereotypical form of Christianity and a God they don't believe in either. God doesn't send anyone into hell as a punishment these days.

Yeah I've heard this BS before. You can interpret it anyway you want. Just look at the TV series Ancient Aliens. I find the literal Christians more honest. They don't bother with the running round saying "Oh no thats not what it really meant." take the westboro church. They just repeat the bible and it pisses everyone off. Its hilarious.

Plus I'm not sure where the metaphor is in being burned in a lake of fire for all eternity. How can you even decide whats the metaphor and whats the literal truth in any of it? Once you start doing that you may as well throw the hole thing out the window.. Preferably into a lake of fire.

What Christians tend to say regarding to the "nasty stuff" in the Old Testament (ignorning the nasty stuff in the New Testament) is that those old Laws of Moses no longer apply because of Gods gift of grace through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. But all that means is that we should still be stoning homosexuals, witches, people who do work on the Sabbath day and so on to literal death but God is just letting us off the hook. It's not like Modern Jews still follow all of it anyway, though slightly more than Christians seeing as pork isn't eaten and foreskins are still cut. At Jews won't try to come up with an excuse they will just say "pffft bollocks to it" and do what they like, they don't really care and neither should you.

Most Christians I've talked in person to tend not to conveniently forget the old testament for absolutely no good reason and do think that hell is a place of all fire and torture. Several also seemed quite happy with the idea of me going there.

Interesting point you make here, I agree, don't you think it's strange how christians claim to be all forgiving yet they seem very excited about our 'supposed' perishment in hell.
