I could be wrong, but I think this is due to me saying that my boyfriend did his best to "live without religion," by which I meant he didn't even so much as participate on forums like this discussing religion, or listen to podcasts or read books about it. Or atheism. He doesn't believe in god, so he doesn't even think about god's non-existence, unless of course someone gets in his face about it.

Consider the time between your prayers as an example of what it;s like to "live without religion". You go to work, you grab some food - you cross a street or two, answer your phone. Check to see that no ones looking and pull your pants out of your crotch, etc. It's just like that.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Islam requires a lot of prayer, if you're doing it right. I mean, DAMN! Clearly you've never been around Orthodox Jews. They pray nearly as much. Or have a prayer they're supposed to be saying for just about every damn thing. Living without religion means not feeling ashamed that some creepy god is watching you masturbate.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
