Two Escambia County sheriff deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave after they opened fire early Sunday morning and shot an unarmed black man in his own driveway.

Roy Middleton, 60, had gone to find cigarettes in his mother’s white Lincoln Town Car, which was parked in the driveway of the man’s home in a quiet neighborhood in the town of Warrington.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, and amid growing criticism, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan held a press conference Monday. According to Morgan, the two deputies said that Middleton “made a lunging motion” out of the car causing them to “fear for their safety.”

Middleton, Morgan said, “had a metallic object in his hand.” That object turned out to be a flashlight attached to Middleton’s key chain.

Some fucking cops....can't tell a flashlight from a gun.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- A 60-year old businessman was attacked in the lobby of the JW Marriott hotel only 16 seconds after a police officer had interjected himself into a peaceful dispute regarding hotel services. It was all caught on video, evidence which contradicts the officer's story.

Brian Hudkins was disputing with hotel staff over the fact that unauthorized people had entered his hotel room. He was upset but not in any way aggressive. He even clasped his hands behind his back.

That's when "Officer of the Year" T. Michael Wilson and Brian Hudkins began interacting. Video shows that in only 16 seconds of talking to Hudkins, he inexplicably grabs him by the shoulders and tackles him violently to the ground. Hudkins had his hands behind his back during the entire body-slam maneuver.

Video footage from outside the hotel shows the officer taking Hudkins to the ground for a second time, again without any clear reason for using that level of force on a handcuffed man.

When asked if it looked like excessive force was used, Police Chief Rick Hite said, "It looks like force was used."

Hudkins suffered cuts and bruises, an injured shoulder, was denied medication, and has had his business and reputation suffer because of the incident. He has filed a lawsuit against IMPD.

I'm not a believer in all cops are corrupt douches. However, when they are corrupt douches, nothing is ever done about it. No wonder this kind of thing is so common.

In a large group of people there will always be bad people. Corruption and abuse of power are universal ills. What varies is the size of the impact that such action has on society. In developed countries, the impact is smaller than that in developing countries and / or underdeveloped countries.

The police force is essential for the state to fulfill its role as originator of the social fabric. It is inevitable that we feel angry when people from institutions such as the police and judiciary responsible for maintaining order commit crimes. And a big problem is corporatism where a colleague protects the other; this practice is quite common to almost all areas and professions.

It is amazing that so many cases of police abuse in the U.S. The second video of the court at the beginning of the topic is especially frightening. I believe that the price of being a country with a large population living scattered in a vast territory is the contrasts. Even I who live inside in an underdeveloped country have more confidence in my court.

A violent society produces a violent police. In my country, which is one of the most violent countries in the world, the police are very violent, though this is changing, in part due to the change of the minimum requirements to be a police officer.

Although one can say that being a cop is the kind of profession that tends to attract people with propensities to violence, depending on the selection process can be quite different employees. Today in my country is required college to be a cop, this alone does not guarantee honesty, but it is better than before when any illiterate took possession of such positions.

You know, I don't particularly buy that. Many larger departments actually do personality screening to weed out some of the bad apples. Personally, on an individual level, some of the finest people I have ever known have been cops. As neighbors, fellow coaches in youth activities, etc. The problem comes when they put on the blue suit and get together with other cops. The courts and politicians have coddled them to the point where they think they can do anything they want in the name of "law and order."

We have sacrificed way too much of our civil liberty because of this anti-drug shit. From no-knocks warrants to stop and frisk the police have been handed powers which they are arguably incapable of handling.

The problem is not the cops so much as it is what we are willing to tolerate... as long as its just minorities who are getting shot.
