What would you say is the most important book for an atheist to read? Or, if you could read only one book on atheism, which one would it be?

The open society and it`s enemies
God is not great The Logic of scientific discovery and as non scientific books: A Portrait of the artist as a young man Heldenplatz (August 10, 2013 at 1:50 pm)The Germans are coming Wrote: The open society and it`s enemies Interesting choices! The only one I was really expecting was God Is Not Great.
There's no point to reading any "atheist" books by Dawkins or any of that sort. However, you should read science books. I recommend Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution and Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries, both by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The Bible. Alternatively the Qu'ran. If you thought you were an atheist before reading them, you know you are after.
There are a lot of scientific tomes out there that one should read, but for fictional (other than the Bible &Co, that is) reading I recommend Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials -series.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
The Demon Haunted World - Carl Sagan
Not specifically 'atheist', but it's a great book on how to think and evaluate ALL supernatural claims. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. RE: Atheism books/authors?

Try "Atheism: A Philosophical Justification" by Michael Martin.
You will find some contemporary apologists who will argue that Martin doesn't address more recent "developments" in theology/apologetics (which I interpret to mean a bigger, better piece of dog shit), but don't be fooled by their smokescreen. His work is absolutely devastating to their position, and they haven't even begun to deal with what he has done. Your interpretation is correct. There is no new argument for the existence of a god. Plantinga, Craig, et al (with their addition of modal logic) are doing nothing more than polishing a turd.
