Skepticism of any claim is (should be) the default position. You're doing it right.

Rest your weary mind
No demons in the furnace below (I am the frenzy)
I have realized I AM GOD

I'm new here.
I was wondering if I could have your views/opinions on this?
Basically, I've never read the bible, I've never been to church (apart from weddings/funerals and when I was dragged along a few times as a kid) and I've really never made any effort to really look into anything religion-based, but I just don't believe what I've heard. I know the basic story that there's a God who made the Earth bla bla bla, and he had a son who killed himself for our sins ... you know.
Is it hypocritical of me to be an athiest when I've never properly looked into Chrisitanity?
Thanks.
Not at all.
As procaracas said, I'll bet you don't feel hypocritical for not being a Muslim or a Hindu.
Have you ever read the Koran or the Hindu Vedas? Have you ever considered Allah or Shiva?
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Negative, good sir with an awesome user name! You are simply an individual who did not have a religion taught to you when you grew up, and as such, you have the default stance, which is to be an atheist.
I would encourage you to seek out a member here by the name of "Vinnie." Well, it's something more than just Vinnie. It's Vinnie somethingorother. But either way, find him on this forum and be sure to inform him you disprove his claim that people are born religious as opposed to born atheists.
And welcome to the forum!

If you don't believe in any gods, you are an atheist. It doesn't matter what religions exist.

There is nothing special about the xtian bullshit story....other than its familiarity. Had you been born in Libya you would think allah was hot shit and jesus just some schlepper.

I will add one more thought.
Unlike what the majority of Christians think (and you may have a bit of this thinking also), atheism is not the opposite of Christianity.
It doesn't take me any more effort to disbelieve in the god character of the Bible as it does to disbelieve in Shiva, Ahura Mazda, Vishnu, or any of the other 1000's of gods believed to exist by humanity.

Welcome and no I don't think so.
But there is a guy around here named Vinnie-something who started a thread stating that atheists always have a burden of proof. Of course, he is an idiot. So no, no problem.
