There aren't "two timeless periods of nothingness" you can experience FFS. This is why I recommended Epicurus, he understood this better than you.
Do I have to scream it into your ugly fucking face asshole!!!!
Change that quote now! If you will not have done it within the next 10 minutes I will report you!

Are you working with a doctor to help treat your clinical depression? I don't think that you can really treat it by running towards or away from god or religious belief; you need the help of a medical professional who can offer therapy and medicine if needed. If your depression has been severe enough in the past that you have attempted suicide, then it is that much more important that you seek help from a professional and not try to resolve it on your own.
My mother has suffered bouts of depression in the past, and she is a devout Christian who believes that god will fix everything and usher her into a paradise on Earth at some point in the future. "Knowing" that god will fix everything is not a cure for clinical depression. Finding a purpose in life without god is not a cure for clinical depression.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

What I wrote there was so profound that I've just bolded it and made it my signature.
Three points for you clever dick...
1 I NEVER said, or even suggested, that you "experience" the two periods of timeless nothingness - they wouldn't be timeless, or nothing, if you were aware of them! What I said, is you experience the living bit, so make the fucking most of it while it's here.
2 I've read Epicurus.
3 FUCK OFF.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

Listen Santorum mouth, don't go around saying that someone understands something better than someone else, especially if you don't know either of them. Furthermore, it is you that has your brain filled with mush.
The two periods that he is speaking of is before birth, which is a nothingness to us, and after death, which is a nothingness to us. Only in your un-evidenced god delusion is there anything else.

Although I've never experienced what you are saying, whenever I feel down I make sure to get involved in community service. Your life is sure to feel meaningful when you're helping others.

Try going to the gym, exercise is good for depression.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Wow, I didn't think it was possible for Taint of Christ to come across as more of an asshole, but mission accomplished. Seriously, you should just shut the fuck up, because nothing pisses me off more than religious stupidity peddled as a psychiatric cure. Take your bullshit elsewhere. I have zero tolerance for it in this discussion.
To the OP, there is no higher meaning to your life, but that doesn't preclude you from making some of your own. I've been an atheist most of my life and suffered from clinical depression for almost just as long. I think the thing you need to ask yourself is why you need your life to have some outside meaning. What is it that makes you desire an objective meaning? Once you can answer that question, you can truly get to the root of the problem and try to understand what it is you need to find your place in this world. You can discover that the only thing stopping your life from having meaning is your inability to bestow meaning upon it and that fulfilment lies in understanding who you are and what kind of difference you desire to make in the world.
I suggest working mainly on fixing your depression and then trying to discover meaning. Figuring out what you need to be content in this world is much easier once you learn to manage your depression, which takes a lot of time, effort, and self-reflection. There are no easy answers, but until you learn how to live your life in a way that minimizes the effect your depression has, no answers will be forthcoming. Focus on treatment and forget about meaning for the time being. Once you learrn how to manage your depression, you can then try to discern what it is that you need to be truly fulfilled.

@ the OP.
I'd like slightly modify Faith's statement to: There is no higher meaning to your life beyond that which you assign to it. You said that at one time you felt God put you here to help other people. Well there is nothing wrong with that, and taking god out of the equation doesn't change the basic premiss that helping others may be the higher purpose your are looking for. Get involved. Find a way that you can make a positive difference in the lives of others. Doing so could help both them and you.
