If you do not know much about how the brain works, then avoid trying to be an expert. Atheists may be versed in facts and opinions in such scientific areas. When things go beyond your capability to define it, then having faith in something larger than natural processes can bring you peace, but not for those who disagree.
Argue agianst evolution and the big bang? Um why? You want to look stupid? Christianity does enough of that for you already.

To my knowledge, most of my friends are non-religious.

But for me it's hard not to feel pity for people who are living this life with the expectation that the next one will be better.

I suppose religious folk feel pity for me that I've not found salvation yet....

That's what I was going to say. At least this is a start. Most just assume they know why we're atheists and spout bible verses like the bible is the ultimate authority on everything.

I'm in agreement with this. I can tell by just reading the wikihow that they have either never seen it before or don't care to subscribe to it.
