At first I went through a period of self hate and was very upset at my realization. I just wanted to believe! And now I can't believe I was ever like that and am incredibly happy as an atheist(: Happier than I was as a Catholic zombie.

I'll be honest I got out early-ish (very early 20s) so I have no section of adulthood to compare with as it were. What I can say is that I can't possibly envisage being any happier pretending that there is a man in the sky despite a lack of evidence. Working in the field of science would make such a leap of faith impossible, because it would require the total abandonment of reason. I can certainly say that with certain societal pressures and concerns aside, I am able to find happiness in a great many things, and believing in some bedtime stories from the desert wouldn't be able to enhance those experiences at all.

I'd say I'm definately more happy now, as I no longer have anxiety attacks about going to hell.

I feared the concept of eternal damnation unhealthily when I was still a Christian. Now that I've rejected all forms of religious belief, I can truly say that I do not miss the irrational fear one bit.
