That's because many of the country's 17,000 police departments don't release information on use of force by police, and the federal government makes no serious effort to collect it. While the government gathers and releases extensive information about violence by citizens, it conceals information about violence by police.

"Excessive force by police is one of the big problems," says Brigitt Keller, executive director of the National Police Accountability Project, who cites as causes the militarization of the police, persistent impunity, and a mythology that exaggerates the dangers police face and deters public officials from challenging them. "I believe the problem is getting worse," Keller says, "but it's hard to say for sure without comprehensive information."

I remember how, especially in the 80s, one of the most popular genre of movies involved the designated 'good guy', frequently a cop, turning to vigilante methods to 'fight crime', typically racking up a body count in the dozens of small-time hoods, and how not only was it not a problem that our heroes were cold-blooded mass murderers, it was the willingness to dehumanize 'criminals', to portray even petty crooks as just something to shoot at, that made our heroes heroic. We were fed the idea that even the slightest violation of the law meant that a person deserved to be blasted without a trial.

In his report to the commission, the chief said he expected that officers "make every effort that they determine that the truck was in fact Dorner's."

He wrote, "While there were similarities, the truck that approached was a different make and model, different color, had no ski racks and no over-sized tires."

Beck said officers opened fire immediately after one woman threw a newspaper and an officer mistook the sound of it hitting the pavement for gunfire.

California Highway Patrolman handcuffs firefighter at the scene of an accident for not moving his truck... even though firefighters are trained to park their trucks behind ambulances to protect workers from traffic. Gotta love it.

Again.... even if true...one knife against two pistols does not seem like much of a "threat." But too many cops seem to be pussies these days. Unless they're just lying and they simply blew him away.
