Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) this week warned Americans to remember that God “wrote the Constitution” based on the Bible.

During an appearance on John Hagee Ministries’ Global Evangelism Television (GETV) network on Wednesday, host Matt Hagee asked the Texas Republican where the country had gone wrong.

“I think we got off the track when we allowed our government to become a secular government,” DeLay explained. “When we stopped realizing that God created this nation, that he wrote the Constitution, that it’s based on biblical principles.”

I'm sure the dickheads in Texas eat this shit up, though.

I'm not so deeply educated in things American, but I would think the date when America became secular was roughly pretty much exactly on July 4th, 1776, no?

Part of the mythology that these idiots are peddling, Alex, is that somehow this was a deeply xtian nation. In fact, this fundamentalist bullshit only began to take hold in the early 20th century. That "old time religion" that the shitheads prattle on about is not so old.

To be sure there were scattered religious enclaves in 1776. Most of the English colonies were Anglican but the intelligentsia which led the revolution had embraced Deism to a large part. Maryland was Catholic. New York was officially Dutch Reform but they allowed all sorts of groups in, including Huguenots and Jews.
