By George...I think you've got it.
Now. All you have to do is figure out how to identify morons BEFORE they acquire the firepower of a company of 17th century musketeers and we'll be getting somewhere.
Meanwhile....
Quote:DURHAM, NC, 4/28/14: A 9-year-old boy was shot and killed in a Macon Street home on Monday night, according to Durham police. Only people with a demonstrated amount of aptitude after having undergone rigorous training and acquired an operator's license, which must be renewed annually, deserve to use guns for protection. But, it apparently infringes FREEDOM to even ensure basic competency (or even the soundness of mental health), so people keep dying by the thousands.

You're leaving out the human factor, Ryan. "Training" is a panacea. I'm sure this guy was trained but not enough to overcome a temporary bout of stupidity.

I would absolutely be okay with a stringent general aptitude test (as well as a thorough mental health examination) being a part of the licensing process.
Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet (no pun intended), because there are simply too many people with hardons for firearms in this country, and the thousands of dead every year are treated as the price we pay so that Jim Bob can have one M4 for every finger he can successfully count.

M4 you say? I'm getting a woody.
As to your requirements I certainly qualify. I have extensive training both military and civilian. I have a license and have had several psychological evaluations for various jobs. Also I have had background checks both for the military and civilian employers.

I very much doubt that you do, otherwise you should have no problem with people owning operational (and being able to use if they feel endangered) RPGs, grenades, and don't even get me started on the tanks. Why should the government be allowed to keep those out of the use of private hands?
Assuming you don't think we should be allowed to own and use such weaponry, it's obvious why you don't: it's unreasonable. There is clearly a limit to which you can reasonably be said to just be trying to protect yourself. Most especially if the weaponry involved has a clear likelihood (and precedence) of hurting others who are not your apparent aggressor.
Now you are just being silly. No one is saying no laws, no restrictions.
His point was there are laws on the books, and more are proposed, that ban some firearms because of how they look, while other equally or more powerful firearms are OK.
He probably owns what are referred to as "assault weapons", a nonsensical, made-up class of firearms.

Quote:A South Carolina woman shot and accidentally killed a friend while testing out his bulletproof vest.
Sheriff’s deputies in Anderson County said the victim, 26-year-old Blake Wardell, had been hanging out in a garage with about eight to 10 friends early Wednesday when they decided to try out the Kevlar vest.
Investigators said 18-year-old Taylor Ann Kelly fired a shot at Wardell’s chest but missed the Kevlar.
Offhand, I'd say the vest failed.
No, it didn't. She missed the vest.

I have training, have passed background checks by local police, state police, and federal agencies. I have had a security clearance.
Jim Bob likely doesn't have even one M4, as that is an assault rifle.
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

Meanwhile, the next installment of law-abiding gun owners who spray bullets around.

I love this guy. Maybe he gets it now but probably not. He's a republicunt.
Quote:Malcolm Barrett Jr. was cleaning his gun last week when a round fired, striking him in the left hand, but causing no serious damage, a Prescott police report said. Barrett, 58, is a past chairman of the Yavapai County Republican Party, a high-profile role that cast him as moderator of many GOP forums and debates.
Quote:In an interview with The Daily Courier, Barrett said, "If I were doing everything the way I should have been doing it, it would not have happened. It was 100 percent preventable." He said he was lucky not to have permanently damaged his hand. "It's one of those things where, when it happens to someone else, you think, 'How stupid can they be?'" he said. "And then you do it yourself."

The cartoon intends to lampoon the poor judgment of gun owners, implying that they shoot people on poorly perceived threats.
The average gun owner is arguable better at judging perceived threats than do the cops, who tend to shoot people waving wallets and cell phones.
Several of my friends and family are concealed carry holders, and most of the people I know as neighbors, relatives and friends are gun owners, yet none of them have ever shot at at a mis-perceived threat that I am aware of, and I would probably know such things. So from my statistical sampling of 50 - 60 people, there certainly isn't a trend to warrant lampooning in a cartoon.
There are at least a couple of us that have been hurt in firearm accidents, the two biggest that come to mind are my own and my uncle's, and in both cases, we were hunting and alone.
So, gun owners do hurt themselves with guns more than non-gun owners, but let's face it, how is a non-gun owner going to hurt himself with a gun?..
