If I'm sentenced to death then deliver it to me as fast as possible, even within that week. I think the death penalty, if anything, is a short cut for the criminal, but it also saves the tax payer money. Everyone wins. The guillotine seems cheaper and faster than lethal injection, so why not just use that? I'm not trying to be insensitive to the poor soul that is on death row, but I really don't understand the big deal here and I'm a liberal...I guess I just disagree with the tradition anti-death penalty liberal stance on it.
Uhhhh... did you miss the part about how 4% or more people on death row are innocent?

Actually, I've read that (in the US, at least) it costs quite a bit more to execute someone that to keep them locked up for life.

But suppose for the moment that you have NOT committed that terrible crime - you were deliberately framed, or the cops or witnesses made an honest mistake. Perhaps the jury was tainted, or the judge didn't like you looks. Wouldn't you, as an innocent man, prefer a system wherein significant time is built into an appeals process, to give you a chance to prove your innocence?
Boru
That is true. The steps taken to prove they are guilty need to be concrete and absolutely solid. If there is a shed or possibility of innocence they shouldn't even be on death row. I agree with that.

But you just that, if you were found guilty, you'd prefer to be executed with the week. Did I take you wrong (apos if I did)?

I'm talking cases like Timothy McVeigh. Ones that either confess or have been proven guilty without a shed of doubt. If there is doubt then I don't think the death penalty should even be an option.

Have no fear, though. This fuckhead Haslam is solidly "pro-life".... as long as it hasn't been born yet....or in the line of fire of some gun nut.

Wasn't George Carlin who summed up US conservatism as 'If you're pre-born, you're fine. If you're pre-school, you're fucked'?

In the event that they can't get the drugs, I'm not sure why they'd fall back on the electric chair instead of just death by morphine overdose or an old fashioned high caliber bullet through the head.

The numbers I've seen in studies for TN was that a case pursuing the death penalty is at least 48% more costly than one that pursues life in prison. Not to mention the high cost of lethal injection (or what have you) in comparison to life imprisonment.

Was that an electric bill joke? Or are you serious?

The death penalty is nothing but vengeance. Haslam's act is an example of how certain kinds of people get off on revenge killing.
We should be better than that.
