Dude, you keep bandying about objective when there really isn't an objective way of looking at it - there's no way to measure whether or not a game is overrated because everyone has their own sliding scale of whether or not the game is worth it. That's what I'm trying to get through to you. Now maybe you think some games are overrated by your scale - that doesn't mean anyone else has that scale, much less everyone else. There isn't a science to people enjoying the shit out of a piece of entertainment - otherwise you'd have to explain Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey, which SUCK, but produce shit-tons of revenue.

That's what I'm trying to get through to you. Bullshit. You can absolutely be objective. You can compare one game to another, you can compare hype, you can compare reviews, you can compare promotion. Most importantly you can compare technical issues with a game, and what I've been trying to get through to you is that Skyrim has far too many for the kind of hype it receives. Am I wrong in saying that? Yes or no? I am of the same opinion when it comes to books, and most especially book snobs. What literature does interest me does not automatically mean it has no value whatsoever just because someone else is of the subjective opinion that it is rubbish.

You ignore every fucking point that I make and say that it is simply me being subjective.

Am I wrong in saying that? Yes or no? You might not be wrong for yourself, because that's part of your sliding scale. You are wrong for me, because the other parts of the game make it worth it for me. Skyrim is absolutely worth the hype FOR ME, even if it isn't FOR YOU, which is why I keep trying to tell you that your "objectivity" is you trying to push your "subjectivity" onto everyone else. I am not ignoring your points, I'm telling you that they don't fucking matter for everyone, clearly, because so many people did and still do enjoy the game that much. That's the brilliance of entertainment. (June 11, 2014 at 10:19 am)thesummerqueen Wrote: You might not be wrong for yourself, because that's part of your sliding scale. And yet you still can't answer my question with an objective answer. It's not impossible. I'm done.
what the fuck objective answer do you want? All the 'measures' people use for gaming aren't scientific - they're opinionated, and thus subjective. You're looking for an outside measure that doesn't exist.
(June 11, 2014 at 9:39 am)Napoléon Wrote: All I've been talking about throughout this thread is games objectively. Whether or not they are overhyped and overrated, objectively. I think that the most objective you can get is by looking at the technical issues of a game, but when you make an evaluation on how great it is overall (or on how other people think how great it is), then, ultimately, that is always going to be a subjective assessment. Along with that, even the major technical flaws that you see in the game might be something minor for someone else. So there's a little subjective element there as well. People naturally tend to magnify or minimize certain problems depending on their own biases, without even knowing it. So I agree with Summer that it's not actually possible to answer objectively as to whether or not a game is overhyped/overrated. I think that Skyrim is one of the games that is overrated, too, but I know that that is not an objective conclusion.
Sonic the Hedgehog on my Sega Genesis was pretty overrated, but I liked it

It's like the devs in the whole first-person shooter genre have made some kind of pact that they'll keep standards low and aim their games at the kind of gamers who will lap up the same rebranded shit every year. Dude, how is everyone forgetting BioShock? However, I would put BioShock Infinite in the overrated category.
Luke: You don't believe in the Force, do you?
Han Solo: Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen *anything* to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense. |
