More than 80% of Mensa members are believers, and another 7% are agnostic. So who you calling stupid, stupid?

in the god delusion Dawkins had atheist mensa members in america at 90%

where did you get your data?

By the way this just in.

There is evidence in our DNA of our ancestors interbreeding with Neanderthals.

I'm calling people that think that god is the explanation for things like a rainbow or the birth of a baby stupid...
Uh...that would be roughly 87% of Mensa members. Who's stupid now?

Still you.

Which makes sense - America is 90% Christian.

Not to mention, Paul the Human said that people who think God is an explanation for rainbows and babies is "stupid". I highly doubt any members of Mensa think that God is an explanation for rainbows and babies, even if they believe in God.

Not everyone answers the surveys, it's a common occurrence when taking statistics, especially gauging a population's beliefs.

Great, i think we are approaching Concordia! Its the same here.... I believe String Theory is a possibility but i don't see any strong evidence for it... just hints and ideas... plus my own laughable understanding of the physics behind it. I don't have faith in String Theory (yet), but I do have a kind of faith in the universe being a natural object without divine intervention... because there is no proof of a god, but there is no proof as to how else if could have occurred (yet!)... and again, with things like abiogenesis and creation of the universe i have to accept things that I can only just get my head around.... the physics or biology/biochemsitry are way beyond me.... however, my wife is a molecular biologist with a PhD in something intelligent sounding.... she usually puts me right when i start to get strange ideas about biological things... still, she can't change a light bulb herself and her knowledge of physics is sorely lacking.

Ah! That would be in the USA? LOL.

I guess you'll believe anything he says. Richard Dawkins is a fraud, but more on that shortly.

Again showing your lack of brain power. Notice that I said believers, not Christians. Let's examine those numbers...

49% Christian
3% Unitarian
9% Jewish
7% agnostic
Total: 68%

3.6% atheist
9% no religion
Total: 12.6%

Total so far: 80.6%

Which means that 19.4% belong to other religions not mentioned, such as Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses, Latter Day Saints and Seventh-day Adventists.*

As demonstrated, only 12.6% of Mensa members are either atheist or have no religion. The final tally: More than 80% of Mensa members are believers, and another 7% are agnostic. Which is what I said in the first place.

*All of these are Abrahamic religions believing in the same God. Like Unitarians, the mentioned Jehovah's Witnesses, Latter Day Saints and Seventh-day Adventists are Christian religions with beliefs distinct from mainstream Christianity.

RE: Evidence God Exists
I'm not sure what your point is. No one ever said that being smart automatically makes one an atheist. Besides, a poll of that sort cannot be considered accurate, due to the fact that most atheists are 'in the closet', so to speak. In fact, for many years, when asked what my religion was, I answered 'Catholic', even though I did not actually believe in god. Furthermore, having a high IQ does not mean that someone has actively questioned the claims that there is a god, which is normally how one becomes an atheist in the first place.

I contend that a large percentage of people that would claim the label 'Christian' never really gave the concept of god any thought at all and really don't know if they believe or not when it comes right down to it. My wife is a good example. When she and I first met, I asked her if she believed and she said, "I guess so. I don't go to church, but... I never really thought about it." Now that she has had the time and inclination to give it some serious thought... she is an atheist. More militant about it than me, to be honest.

So, what I'm saying is... asking most people if they believe or not does not necessarily provide you with a good gauge as to whether or not they really do. And, to reiterate, being intelligent does not make one an atheist. We all know that. So... you have no point.

RE: Evidence God Exists
I'll have to agree strongly with Paul.

I was once constantly visiting this website sometime ago and on my profile I mentioned that I was an atheist. A young girl PMed me and asked how I could not believe in god? She was quite aggressive at first. I asked what she thought of atheists and as I expected, she had a low opinion of us. But when I asked her if she really believed in god, she said "well I don't think I do". Suprised the hell out of me but skipping ahead she went on to say that she doubts the existance of god but can't come out as an atheist. Something about her religious parents. She doesn't really think little of atheists as a whole. She is one herself but a closet atheist.
I think many, and I mean MANY peope who claim to believe, only say they do to avoid discrimination.
If you brought every person who claimed to believe in god into a seperate room where their answer will be kept confidential, you might be suprised of the answer they give you when you ask them again.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Paul the Human Wrote:Besides, a poll of that sort cannot be considered accurate...
If the results turned out in your favor, then you would consider it accurate. Now you're just dismissing my evidence with no evidence of your own.
Paul the Human Wrote:...having a high IQ does not mean that someone has actively questioned the claims that there is a god, which is normally how one becomes an atheist in the first place.
Right. Because to you people only question faith when they think negatively upon it. If someone thinks hard about God, as did I, and the results are a positive embracing of the Lord, then he hasn't really questioned faith. This is a biased standard. Plenty of people question God, and as a result they turm towards him, including highly intelligent people.

That's your evidence? You and your wife? Since when did the two of you become a complete and reliable poll to gauge the validity of Christianity? What you're offering here is an opinion based on the experiences and beliefs of one married couple. Couples often come to think as one in these matters, anyway.
Paul the Human Wrote:And, to reiterate, being intelligent does not make one an atheist. We all know that. So... you have no point.
It is a general consensus among atheists that believers are stupid. It was you who brought it up, remember? So I do have a point.
