You know, it'll probably be wasted money as well. A determined suicide will find a way and if they're trying to make a statement, as many Golden Gate jumpers have tried to do, they'll make an even bigger one jumping from the suicide net.

But that doesn't end up in the pockets of politically-connected corporations, does it?

I sincerely doubt it'll make them reconsider anything other than venue.
There are far better ways to spend taxpayer money to prevent suicide.

If it were cost free yes. But since it isn't maybe not. How many lives could be improved with the same money?

If the goal was to save the most lives with the least money (and weird to consider, that apparently is NOT the goal) the money spent on the net if directed to a sanitation project in India, or a vaccination campaign in Africa would save FAR more lives.
The same is true of seat belts on school buses, in case you were wondering about that too.
Having raised the money issue, is the net cost justified by the savings to the public in retrieving the bodies from the bay? Has anyone raised the concern it might be cheaper than having boats and 'Tommy James' Draggin' the Line ???

Stop using our commons. Really. Just stop.
So, everyone that threatens to jump is a suicide tourist and the city of SF has no responsibility at all for the plight of the person involved? I wonder how the lack of suitable rent controls combined with no-fault evictions might have contributed to some of the would be/successful jumpers?
I don't see why a jumper should impede traffic. Let the do gooders walk to the jump site. In fact, all it should take is one person to go up and push; problem solved.
Before people get excited about my perfectly valid solution, nobody cares about these people before they jump so what really is the difference? Also, it seems that the concern then is only commensurate with how inconvenient the person's final act is to commuters and has nothing to do with their well being.

Always the same Moros, look into anger management or something. Nothing in my post would lead you to call me such a thing, I wasn't insulting anybody. The thing that makes it worse when you respond to me like this is that I've always thought we've had a good understanding. Surely you realise that I'm not meaning to hurt anyone's feelings? If I did, explain it to me. Why resort to this petulant name calling? I could understand if you didn't know me, but fuck, you do. You can be a real asshole sometimes. Seems you've learnt fuck all from the last time you got all aggressive with me.

I depend on the SF Bay area transit system, and I've always been appalled at how the Golden Gate bridge has been a popular suicide destination.
With all due respect, so what. Putting up a net isn't going to sort out suicide issues is it? Of all the people who go on about coming up with tangible solutions I'd have thought you'd be bright enough to realise that.
No, your argument is one of inconvenience. Ironic how it's actually you who seems to lack compassion in this instance.

What fucking planet are you on? Where in my post do you get this? Do you really think I'm suggesting this? Really? Disingenuous cunt.

The point is merely that we don't have unlimited resources. Therefore spending a lot of money so that just one person might reconsider is not worth it. We tend to spend money where public emotion is currently fixed at the expense of everything else. This spending all the money in the world to save a single child attitude makes sense only if there is only one child in the world.
How we allocate money is a whole nother thread.

It either forces them somewhere else or delays them long enough for a police officer/suicide prevention agent.
Many people don't receive any help from others until they demonstrate they're about to end it all.
Instead of giving the despairing the options they need, you want them to off themselves.

You are not offering compassion. You are allowing the suicidal to complete their suicide.
You're not offering them the options that they were denied and drove them to this position.
Ghoulish.

damn straight I think you are supporting suicide. You are pitching dark predictions about the suicide barrier even if it slows someone down.
You don't give one bit of shit if this barrier causes one person to reconsider and seek help.
You don't say "yes and we can do more". You treat it like a zero-sum game.
