Either you weren't paying attention or I just read a lot of Lost sites...a load of those "unanswered questions" have been answered.

Not on the show itself, and not to my satisfaction. I loved that show from beginning to almost end, but the end ruined it in it's entirety for me. They never had a story to tell, they just had a gimmick to keep us watching for six seasons. It was a big let down for me.

"Who and whence came, the Others?"
Jacob brought them to the Island. That was quite a major part of Season 6. Jacob brings people to the island to prove the Man in Black wrong about human nature. When Richard arrives, he makes him his representative and the "Others" form as a group (under the leadership or Richard and then other people).
"What is this island?"
If Jacob is to be believed, it is the place that separates darkness (i.e. Hell) from the normal world. The light source is the only thing that prevents this evil from spreading, and when the Man in Black was thrown into it, the evil managed to manifest itself in him (through his anger and hatred) and the Smoke Monster was created. Due to the "rules" the smoke monster couldn't leave the island since the light source was still active, and so had to kill the protector by manipulating his followers.
"What the hell is going on?"
That depends on which part of the series you mean. Pretty much the entire show is based around destiny and people being brought together. Jacob is looking for replacements as he knows the Man in Black will eventually find a way to kill him, and so he finds the people who live (or will live) empty lives, always being alone in some way. These people become candidates and are given numbers, and Jacob alters their lives so they will find themselves on the Island. The Man in Black can't kill the candidates directly (or perhaps only under some circumstances like with Eko...if Eko was a candidate) so he must manipulate people in order to do so.
It is clear (at least it is heavily implied) that the man at Jacob's cabin is not Jacob, but the Man in Black, since Christian Shepherd appears there, and the "shadowy" man who Locke sees bears a striking resemblance to the Man in Black. Jacob specifically says that he never talks to the Others directly, only through Richard. The Man in Black however does not follow such rules.

Yeah, I actually got most of that on my own. That's the overlying (macro) story, though it lacks any true detail. It's the details that left me wanting. I'm not one to look at a bunch of websites (not that big a fan of any show/movie really) or watch episodes more than once or even discuss the show in detail with others. I just watched it each week as it aired and I felt there were a lot of little things that happened in the show from week to week that deserved explanation and most of them didn't get one. Even your description leaves me asking... How? - Why? - What rules? - and so on.
And too many things that happened don't seem to mean anything other than as a cause to say "Oooohh!" or "What?!" I honestly think they were making a lot of shit up for that reason alone, with no intention of ever making it make sense. I don't know. I watched the show loyally for six years and feel completely let down by the way they ended it. I just do.
Thanks for trying. Heheh.
(EDIT: I know how to put it. It was too mystical for my taste. Mystical allows you to cop out on any and all real explanations and I'm disappointed that, after all that, they went that route.)

Glad I passed on this series. I was pretty put out by the BSG ending, so this one might've ticked me off, at least with the pacing.
+kudos for Min's suggestion and Meatball's post.
