What if we're all wrong though?

RE: What if we're all wrong though?
What if we're wrong?

Then I have a lot of questions for this "all-loving, all-knowing, all-powerful" being. Starting with, "How can you do nothing while children suffer and die from cancer?"
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.

God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?

That's a piece of cake for this blood-thirsty incarnation of someone's worst nightmare.

Numbers 31

Quote:17Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

18But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

What's cancer compared to this?

Agree completely.

Which is why I can't understand how anyone can believe this deity is "loving". People should just be honest about it and admit they worship this deity because they're scared out of their wits at what might happen if they DON'T worship it.

It seems to me that our choice is this:

1. We can set aside our critical faculties and believe in one or another of the strange and twisted fairytales that religionists subscribe to. By doing so, we enslave ourselves to phantoms, debase ourselves before our own delusions, willingly give up our autonomy of thought and judgement.

or

2. We can look at the world rationally, and live and think as free people.
He who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

According to the Warhammer 40K explanation, "gods" are going to be a bunch of daemonic influences in the Warp, and unless you plan on donating your soul to the Star Child, you're gonna get tortured for all eternity or eat or something.

It sucks to live in Warhammer 40K, but it is fun to play Warhammer 40K...

Well if I am wrong, it will be the first and only time I have been wrong in my life, except for that one time.

Do the 3 of you still see a problem with the P.O.E. God is personified with many actionable characteristics both good and bad in the Bible. The only attributes purely descrptive I'm aware referring to God are "God is Love", "God is among us", "God is judge", "God is holy", "God is pure" and "God is righteousness". The fact people attribute actionable thinkgs like vengeful and balme their own inequities and percieved injustice/evil and natual disasters on God still baffles me.

You're presumptions are showing Big Grin you can have 2 and religion. You just can't have an entirely materialistic view of reality, or a lack of belief in a soul and religion. I don't believe I fall into any of the traps defined in one, I'd be happy if you pointed out where I am though (especially the auonomy of thought and judgement).

Do you believe this deity sometimes takes action to affect people's lives? (Things like curing disease, saving someone from dying in an accident, arranging for two people to meet, etc...)

Well you should know what it is if you claim to be an atheist. Pascal's Wager is the most common argument used by the average Christian to convince an atheist to believe. Most people use the simplified version of "What if you're wrong?".

Iron Chariots Wrote:Pascal's Wager is the argument that states that you should believe in God even if there's a strong chance that he might not be real, because the penalty for not believing, namely going to hell, is so undesirable that it is more prudent to take our chances with belief.

In brief, Pascal's wager fails because it assumes you can force belief and trick God that you are believer. I don't choose not to believe, I am convinced there is no reason to believe. Secondly, which God? There are many different religions that state clearly you must believe in them only to get to heaven. They can't all be right, but they can all be wrong.

Read this for a more extensive breakdown of why Pascal's Wager fails.

Lastly, Dawkins gives one of my favorite responses to the "What if your wrong?" question.
