Hi, I'm looking for answers

Hi, I was raised to be strictly religious. Me and my husband went to some Christian forums and asked some questions. I don't really know that we had them answered. So I am coming here. Me and my husband are kind of borderline right now. We believe theres a god maybe, but we are not sure that he cares or has the right motives etc.

My husband feels like god is playing the biggest mmo ever lol. That we are all just a game. I kind of agree with this. I feel very distraught because my mother who is the a very sweet pentocostal woman lost her husband and father recently. She lost her job had to move in with us. She has a very rare disease called Dystonia (like Parkinson's but worse) amid other aliments. When they eliminated my mothers position she looked at me and said maybe god has eliminated me to.... I'm just very angry that someone (God) would do this to her. I just don't understand.

I also, feel like some things my mother thinks are sinful are not. I feel like if we have to follow the Christian religion it would be impossible this day and time with all of the temptations and horrible things going on.

Anyway mainly I wanted to give you some of my background. I want to she why all of you choose atheism? Why do you feel like there really is no god? If there isn't I know that sucks, but a lot of things in life do...

I'm not so sure that you'll find a lot of answers here. We tend to ask questions and the more certain the believer the more questions they face. Believers do not like questions. Questions are unruly.

The prefer answers and pretend that they have them already.

I second both of those statements. Welcome... and ask questions. Asking questions about religion and the existence (or nonexistence) of god(s) is how most of us came to call ourselves atheists. It doesn't have that effect on everyone, but the path to answers is paved with questions.

It is good that you are searching, and that should never stop. There are many interesting people here with varied opinions, I'm sure you will receive much food for thought. The one question that stood out to me is your compound question below.

I want to she why all of you choose atheism?

It assumes that atheism is a choice then asks why we made that choice. The fact is that one does not choose atheism, one simply ceases to believe in God, god, gods, or goddesses, or even Goddesses. The universe is wonderful; no gods required.

I didn't choose atheism, it just happens that every single other religious view is illogical to me.

I never really understood how one could put together the concept of a person interacting with the world and the concept of omnipotence, omniscience, being outside of time. It's like trying to put a cube into a triangle-shaped hole.

Even if we assume that the Bible has been written right after Jesus' death and that noone changed its content over 2 millenia. There is no reason to think that what's inside is true, especially if it goes against common sense.

Not only has the Catholic church removed portions, they have even made up a few things (purgatory, for example)... but the bible(s) have gone through much more editing than even the Catholic church has done. The books of the New Testament were all written by different people at different times and none of them actually knew that Jesus guy. When looked at critically, neither bible seems to contain much in the way of verifiable facts. Believing that the bible(s) are true, after giving them a critical evaluation, requires faith that they were, in fact, inspired by the big guy himself.

In other words, in order for the bible(s) to be true, the Christian god must exist. And even then, there is the question of historical evidence that confirms the existence of the people and places in the stories, of which there is little to none. Even if the Christian god is real, the factual accuracy of the bible(s) are questionable at best.

I'm assuming you have read the bible. Do you find the stories to be rational and logical?
Well it is real in the sense of the word, it does exist, but this does not mean the contents have to be historically accurate.

People get sick from bacteria, viruses, genetic traits, free-radicals, and other scientifically testable means. No one has got sick from an "act of god". The thought of god controls everything is sad to me, we are not controlled or judged by anyone but ourselves, and you should live your life to please yourself, and not a god that does not exist(my opinion). God did nothing to her, it is just life. We get sick and we die.

Sinful.... here is how I base how I act and what I do. I live to be as happy as I can possible be and I will strive to be happy as long as I do not interfere with another humans ability to pursue the same thing. I.E I wont steal.. also I won't persecute a homosexual, if it makes them happy then so be it, they are not interfering with my ability to be happy. Something to ponder I suppose.

I have bolded the key word in the phrase. How are we to distinguish that bunch from all the other bunches of people who think they are god's 'chosen.'

Why should one band of nuts be celebrated over any other?
