Evidently there is a addiction aspect to the new "gun fever." My daughter's boyfriend's family is suddenly spending lots of money they don't have on guns of different types. They went from only owning an antique 22 cal unfireable parts gun inherited from their great grandfather to three concealable pistols, an assault shotgun and a couple of rifles, spending thousands.

This sudden desire for weaponry was proceeded by a physical attack on the dad in a McDonald's drive-through in which a belligerent bastard started screaming and throwing things at the cars waiting in line. The dad yelled back at the man to calm down and not throw things at his car. This prompted the crazy nut to open the passenger door and drag the medically disabled dad out of the truck and hit him several times until other men in the line subdued him.

He has pushed his wife to also join him in getting their CCP. For people that were just holding their own financially, they are spending big bucks to not only chisel away at the "helpless against an attacker" fear, but now to join the prevailing gun "fashion" which is to buy deadlier and more militaristic looking firearms. There are "fads" in the gun culture and some people are so worried that they won't own the latest and greatest.

I grew up in a "gun culture" but it was markedly different than what I see today. Because they know that I own guns, have a CCP, and was a competitive shooter, they love to show me every new acquisition, over which of course I must "Oohh & Aahh" to be polite, but in my mind I think "what the hell do you need this for?"

I wish there was some way to get them to read all of the entries of Min's post here. Taken as a whole it is quite sobering. They are staunchly Catholic so I can't actually invite them to read it without infuriating my family.

It is always a trade off, but the fact of the matter is the only reason why the US has not befallen to tyrants is the armed public and the intense distrust of government. This is not to say we can have a society with out armed citizens, however we are not perfect and still need armed citizens. An Ideal society is one who can have weapons and not want to kill each other. I mean we already are having issues with Cops, imagine how they will act knowing citizens ARE NOT armed at all.

If the US ever falls into the hands of tyrants it won't be someone we elected. It will be as the result of some gun nutter deciding to take matters into his own hands. I'm rooting for the government I elect not some discontent with an arsenal.
