I'm gonna go ahead and assume you're a late teen / early 20s. Here's what I remember about that time with affection.
Fucking NOTHING!!

it hurts because you're seeing that interaction as a problem with you. Might be he was in a hurry. Maybe he needed a piss. Maybe he was also shy. Whatever, it really doesn't matter.

Are you male or female?

I'm a guy.

Part of me feels like I shouldn't seek out the approval of others. Letting others define how I feel about myself would just be plain stupid. I just wish that in this world everyone was cool. Another part of me just wants friends. In our world getting self confirmation is very hard.

That's because it doesn't come from the world, it comes from the self. I hope you are able to heal your anxieties.

This.

MLA, you have got to stop wallowing in it. Stop playing the victim and self actualize. Friends aren't going to happen just because you want them to.

You are socially awkward. Okay. Tons of people are. I have a friend who is the most socially awkward person I have ever met. He says the weirdest things at the most inappropriate times, but that makes him unique to me, and it he owns it. It is endearing, one of the many reasons I call him a friend.

Put yourself out there, knowing that the worst that can happen is that you continue to feel lonely and rejected, but the best that can happen is that you could forge a friendship. A real friendship, where you can be you and someone likes you for that.

2 miles is nothing, not worth worrying about.

Do you have any idea what it's like in a mental hospital in our country? I was in one for drug related problems and they treated me like shit. I don't trust them. I hate them.
You have at least one problem, and until you at least admit that much you shouldn't be worried about blaming others. Whether they don't do shit or not it's not their fault you have an issue in the first place.

RE: so much pain
It's nice that everyone rallied for this person in an effort to make them feel better.
That's all you can do.
To then say,'hey, we tried to help but now you should stop wallowing in it', is, in my view, worse then saying anything in the first place.
It's not that easy to climb out of depression.
If it sounds like, poor me poor me, that's because that's exactly what it is.
It's the same excruciating mental pain that someone feels when they lose a loved one, but usually without as good a reason.
It only makes it worse to know that and still not be able to get a handle on it.

I'm not saying that what people have said is wrong, just that it doesn't help.

My point is, let's just try to help people in mental crisis and if we don't understand it or they annoy us, just leave them alone altogether.
Unless of course they start doing crazy shit like TC. :-)

LL, you're not qualified to give a diagnosis and we don't know that he has depression. Which is precisely why I didn't say anything. We know he has an issue, we don't know if it's his fault, somebody else's fault or nobody's fault.

I was just thinking about the op, and the situation and the fact that there are a few possibilities from the information we've been given:

1. He may have made the other guy feel uncomfortable.
2. The other guy many not be interested in making new friends.
3. The other guy might have had another reason to leave in a hurry.

And about MLA these are all possible:

1. He may feel socially isolated.
2. He may not make friends very easily.
3. He may be overreacting.
4. There may be another issue causing him to feel this way.

He dwells on things he hates rather than things he likes. That's about the most we know about him.

So I disagree with your statement, we don't know how to "help someone" when there are plenty of possible explanations for the situation and it'd be presumptuous to assume that we know what the right one is.

He doesn't like what doctors tell him, there's a number of different possible explanations for that too. But at the end of the day if he wants to work out what his issue or issues are then he will need professional advice not yours or mine.

Glad to hear it. Hope you realise that stuff in the op wasn't that important.

I still think you can be nicer and more sensitive about it. You know that whole "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" thing...
