Dear Americans: What's the leading cause of death among the young?
November 12, 2014 at 2:33 am
Do you know?
The leading cause of death for young people (under 30) in the USA is
It eclipses communicable disease.
15,500 people a year in the USA die to
compared with 600 in Canada. Granted the USA has around 10x the population of Canada, but that means this the death rate from this cause of death is still well more than double Canada's!

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK
"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

I didn't see either of those stats in your link... the article concerns violence and unintentional injuries, and what we can do to improve education and awareness.

No only does Canada have fewer people, it also has more area, meaning that you've got to go a lot farther to shoot someone. And that really isn't convenient, is it?

Canadian numbers: http://statcan.gc.ca/
USA numbers: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/homicide.htm (a little higher than the number I originally quoted).

Homicide rates per 100,000 per year:
USA: 4.7
Canada: 1.6
Japan: 0.3
UK: 1.0
NZ: 0.9
Australia: 1.1
China: 1.0
India: 3.5

America overall has a warmer climate than Canada.
Warmer weather usually makes crime more likely to happen just for practical reasons, like it's easier to be out on the streets dealing drugs, robbing people, raping people in warm weather than it is in the cold.
Crimes of passion, jealousy and so on are more likely to happen in places wear women wear more revealing clothing. Women's visible sexual body parts have the effect of increasing a man's testosterone I think.
And like the other guy said, there's a higher population in a smaller area.
A lot of it probably is cultural though.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.

I think it's mostly down to culture, but if I was to guess the risk factors (without looking at any peer review literature) I would harbour a guess that income inequality would be the largest contributing individual risk factor. I base that guess on the fact that of OECD nations I believe Japan has the lowest income inequality and as you can see above a very low homicide rate when compared with other developed countries.
Lower levels of health, welling, security and subjective happiness would also be contributing risk factors.
It's something to think about.
