Frodo was just poking fun at you I'm sure. You wrote you obtained some freeware and he was just "correcting" your post crossing out the 'freeware' and inserting 'pirateware' meaning you got some 'ware' to pirate your (or your friend's) stolen laptop.

I may be a pain in the ass but I still don't buy your "my 70 year old friend lost his password that he never set" (?) story. And maybe, just maybe, Frodo is with me on this one and was joining in on the funz to be had at your expense.

Hiren's CD contains fully working commercial software that is definitely NOT freeware. You'll find it removed from any responsible site for this reason.

Really? I didn't know that. Do you have an example? It was recommended to me as freeware by a trused friend.He may not know.

A claim like the one you have related would surely have had Hiren closed down by now, if it held any truth... and he's up to v10.6 or something.

Your interlocutor would need to provide some proof.

IF it's Frodo's word against my friend's, I'll accept my friend's. Unfortunatey,Frodo has very little credibility with me.

If you go check out the contents page on Hirens own site you'll see the commercial apps listed as '$'. Other apps listed as 'freeware' are actually abandonware and still subject to copyright law.

Unless you also own licenses to Drive SnapShot, ImageCenter 5.6 (PowerQuest - NOT the version that was rolled into Symantec Ghost, but the old PQ version from 2002), Windows 98, Windows XP, The Winternals edition of NTFSDOS Pro, Paragon's Mount Everything (now Paragon Manager 11) and Paragon Partition Manager, HDD Regenerator, the old PartitionMagic Pro package (again, before Symantec), Avanquest (then VCOM) Partition Commander, Active Password Changer, ...etc. I could go on - there's another 10 non-free packages on the disk, not to mention a whole host of DOS command-line apps (like pkzip) that are non-free. Unless you also have licenses for all 24 non-free software packages (plus each non-free DOS command-line utility), you're downloading and using warez.
