If being hateful is the key to the kingdom, I rather join the guy in the basement.

You should look up what Fred Phelps' track record is and reconsider if you think him to be a man of god or even a decent human being. If you stand by your opinion of him being a good man, well that's another brick in the wall, as Pink Floyd used to sing.

Mine too. He was actually terminally ill with cancer when playing that character, and used that to fuel his performance.
