From my point of view, the pope can't do much of anything without fucking up. He changes doctrine, he's an apostate. He doesn't change doctrine he's a bronze age troglodyte. As long as the church isn't burning pedophile priests at the stake, he's lax on child abuse. Until the church passes a forensic audit and divests all the loot and treasure they've piled up, the pope is worshipping Mammon. Any outreach to other faiths and he is practicing the sin of ecumenism. Liberalizing divorce/remarriage constitutes approval of adultery.

Sounds like damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. To us of course it's better to be viewed as an apostate than all the other stuff, but he's supposed to care more for a soul he can't prove he has than anything else. This is the worst thing about religion. If you change with the times, you're betraying the lord. If you don't then you're betraying society.
