I swear, theists just stick their fingers in their ears when we explain how morality is actually formed. We get our morality from our environment, our family, our friends but also our empathy. Something that every human is born with, excluding psychopaths. We are capable of recognizing something bad and imagining it happening to us or someone we love. Therefore we understand and we don't do these things to other people (steal, rape, murder etc) and we also help out. For example, neither I or any of my family has had cancer, and yet I donate monthly to Cancer Research UK. No god is needed to explain morality. And i'm not even going to get into the evolutionary side of it because I know Rondee would rather chop off his ears then accept that.

It seems that the time is ripe for opinion and lies to replace truth and morality.

And now that God has been ceremoniously and conveniently stripped from society... EVERYTHING will be based on public opinion. The lines will be blurred; and goal posts with wheels on what was once a moral foundation. ONE, that held all else to a higher standard.

If we'd managed to strip god from society I would probably notice. Don't you think? In any case, I don;t think the foundation you're referring to was ever moral to begin with. Now what?

Even atheists must agree, that the society as we are now morphing into is due to a lack of instilled morality. I've heard here, that empathy is all that one needs to build a moral bases..... I ask, where do you find that in the general public? Who finds empathy, and where? A video game, or sniper movie? Perhaps an evening of s&m porn will make one empathetic? No, there is no tap for empathy. We hope some parent, somewhere is teaching their child how to empathize.... and not to walk by a bleeding person in the street who may be our child!

I don't see any reason to propose that we're somehow less moral, or not "instilled with morality". This "moral drift" narrative is absurd. I don;t think it has anything to do with morality, as above. I think it's a cover description for drifting away from some busybodies personal opinions. You'll find empathy wherever you find human beings - as usual. I doubt too many people teach kids to walk past a person that needs medical attention. Who the fuck do you think does this? Where is this happening? Jesus christ.......

Per society (and atheist) wishes, God and His people will diminish. But then, Allah and his cohorts are their replacement! A New World Order needs a new minor annoyance.... Oui? Do you not find it strange that our society is now embracing almost everything that is counter to our sense of natural order? Its actually, mind boggling! And at a pace that is making heads spin! Or roll as Allah and our govt would have it!

My "atheist wish" is that the notion of god diminishes, not the people who hold the notion. My father in law has a narrative like this. In your fantasy, you're the first to go in some revolutionary change,- jackbooted by force and numbers. In his, the first thing they do is storm into his home and confiscate his bible. Both of you have found a way to make yourselves central to and in primacy of a larger narrative you express as having relevance to all. How soberly have we addressed this, do you imagine?

Actually, the crime rate and teen pregnancies are decreasing everywhere in the US. Society isn't getting worse.

When religious people say that society is becoming less moral, they are often speaking about sexual morals and not crime. Yes. it is true that women are shamed less for having premarital sex just because they feel want sex. It is less dangerous for same sex couples to hold hands in many areas of the country then it was a few years ago. Things aren't perfect but we are slowly improving. Of course, this terrifies certain religious people more then war or violent crime and it is what they focus on when they say that society is falling apart.

I watched The West Wing till the fourth season, and it always pissed me off that the President consults his Catholic Priest in the Oval office in times of crises. Especially in the death penalty episode where the priest is on the right side of the issue for once but still gives blessings.

I would rather base morals on the current public opinion of my own society instead of the past public opinion of an extinct bronze age society.

The bad parts of the world are due to believers who think that their "instilled morality" gives them carte blanche to punish anyone who doesn't come up to their "standards".

If all religion was removed the amount of horror in the world would reduce.
