A thought just occurred to me:
We hear all the time that god 'tests' and 'judges' people in order to determine whether or not they're worthy of entering heaven. But, really, the kinds of tests he normally makes his followers take are usually cruel. People aren't usually tested that way unless what's coming next is worse.
So, maybe heaven isn't actually eternal paradise, but actually a worse place than earth....

well... .... cruel people tend to be the most religious so god only wants cruel heartless people in heaven if you think about it. He only wants you to love him so forget about loving everything and accepting everything. When it comes to god your love goes to him no one else...

I don't think I've ever seen a correlation between how cruel someone is and how religious they are.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Are there actually studies on that? I know there have been studies on kindness and the role religion may play, but the opposite? It would be interesting to see.
Anecdotally, the most religious people I know run the gamut. The worst was my father, who was convinced that he saw god and that god spoke to him and told him he was a good person, doing a good job living. My father is a convicted and currently rotting in prison child molester, so....

There are correlations between intolerance and religion - Reasonable Doubts does a good job of talking about them. But correlation is still not causation.

Religion promotes a lot of bigotry. It shouldn't have to go without saying, but people who are intolerant of atheists tend to be theists.

Fuck me with my own avatar.
Just reading this thread for the first time.
@OP...sorry this happened to you. No one should say this to another. IMO.
@ robvalue. Omg. I was hired to baby sit while the adults had study or something. They brought their mean, bratty kids. Couldn't pay me on that day, so they would tack a check to a cork board. When they remembered. I was super low income and counting on it. They had me show up early to turn lights on, cook, etc. They were neither friendly or nice. Unlike Christians they DIDN'T want me to join there flock.
It was maybe 4 or 5 weeks in that a 9year old boy punched me so hard in the stomach that it took my breath away. Needless to say, as soon as I could I pounded on the door where the adults were and told them I was leaving. Grabbed my stuff and walked out. I don't know if they remembered to pay me. I didn't care, although that 40 bucks was a lot of money to me in 96.

well, intolerance isn't necessarily cruelty, either.

I don't know that any study has been done regarding that relationship. I wonder if Milgram documented religious leanings in his study back in the 60s?

Blimey. He could make it all better right? But he won't?
Voyeur sadist. I don't think he is worthy of making excuses for.
Haven't you as a child ever done wrong and your mom caught you, and then spanked your butt. We're getting our butt spanked.
Who said life was fair?
If I did spank my kids, which I don't. I wouldn't spank ALL of my children for what ONE did, much less grandkids, and great grandkids and so on. Makes your god sound like a loon.
