Finding Community
Hello, everyone.

I've been an Atheist for quite a bit of time now, perhaps since I was eight years of age although I cannot pin down the exact moment it all changed.

I had been educated across numerous religious based schools, first in my primary and then in my secondary, eventually moving on to College which was, of course, an open environment with no restrictions on those kinds of beliefs whatsoever. It was a great move, for numerous reasons. Although it didn't work out, the atmosphere was always cool and almost devoid of stress.

From what I can remember, I had become an Atheist simply due to the fact that an ascension to Heaven or descent to Hell outside of my own physical body was difficult to comprehend. I realised that those which lay outside of the boundaries of the physical world were impossible to fully understand, and seemed incredibly unlikely. Therefore I decided that it just couldn't happen. I think I came to this realisation somewhere between my being eight to ten years of age, and recall when I went to secondary school I was an Atheist through and through.

I have a lot of things to discuss but I suppose I'll save them for separate posts. Ultimately, my life has boiled down to rejecting an omnipotent being and any form of spirituality, instead only focusing on logical pursuits and that which we can actually comprehend. This is, I'll admit, a rather close minded assumption that the world is only what we understand it to be. I suppose with that logic it's difficult to grasp the supposed eleven dimensions that string theory seems to throw at us, although that is different as it is physical and not ethereal.

This is all I really have to say. It's a long introduction but I thought I should explain myself a little. Joining an Atheist forum seems like something I should have done a long time ago, but it never crossed my mind. Perhaps I just didn't think they existed?

Thanks, everyone. Sorry if this is one of those tl;dr moments. Wink

RE: Finding Community
Hi Living in Death, nice to meet you Smile Not too long at all! I like to have a nice introduction to learn something about the new member.

It sounds like you are a sceptic, and that's the farthest thing from being closed minded. It's about not believing something until there is good reason to do so. There is no good reason to believe in afterlifes, gods, spirituality... any of that stuff. There just isn't. But if new and compelling evidence came along, then I expect you, along with other sceptics, would be happy to reconsider. To blindly accept things people spew out about all these things is being gullible. You hear a different story from every person, and to believe them all would be maddening and pretty much impossible anyhow.

So welcome aboard! I look forward to reading more from you, I like a good discussion. Congrats on seeing through the bullshit at such an early age.

Hello! Willkommen!
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Welcome, LID.

It's good to be grounded in reality, just remember that the universe simply is - completely independent of anyone's ability to understand it. I don't understand Christians. They go on happily existing anyway.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
