Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion [SPOILERS WITHIN]
RE: Game of Thrones Season 5 Discussion [SPOILERS WITHIN]
Also, what did Littlefinger think he was doing by throwing her to the wolves, and then going to King's Landing. I mean, I know he had to go to play the game, but it's odd to me that he didn't at least stick around for Sansa's wedding.

Yeah, you'd think he'd at the very least want to keep his asset safe even if he doesn't really care about her. I can't really remember but I think in the books they said it takes about a week to get from Winterfell to King's Landing, anything could happen in the two weeks it would take to get there and back

Up until now the parts of the series where the show writers have tweaked the books have if anything been an improvement on the books in my opinion, this is a worrying sign for future episodes where they go off-book totally, it doesn't really make sense

Injuring, hurting, killing, drinking are all part of it, because you've lost your identity, because you now owe your allegiance to this thing that's bigger than you are and that controls you.”  - George Carlin

Although Sansa's such a calamity she'd probably expect the cavalry to break down the gates and rush in to save her only to find that no-one's awake to see the candle in the tower

In the previews for next week it showed Sansa making an appeal to Theon that there were people in the North who would help her.  At least I thought that's what I saw, I could be misremembering...

If that is the case I don't know what to expect.  Will Theon really be so broken that he runs and tells Ramsay all about Sansa's helpers?  Or will he be able to overcome his Ramsay-phobia and help Sansa?  And why is Sansa saying all this to Theon if she hates him for killing her brothers?  does he confess to her that they were farm boys that he killed?

Could just be that she hates Ramsay so much she's willing to swallow her pride. Theon is the lesser of two evils at this point and, maybe, her best hope of bettering her circumstances.

Am I the only one finding a huge discrepancy between the books and the show, or has it just been too long since I read the books?

Oh, they're completely off the books this season. Only one storyline is close, and that's the wall.

Apologies if spoiler tags are needed for people planning to read the books after the series ends, I would've put them in just in case but don't know how :

Sansa's storyline is completely off-book

The Dorne story is somewhat off-book - Jaime's in the Riverlands at this point in the books so he doesn't go there with Bronn (Bronn doesn't really do anything in the books after Tyrion's smuggled to Essos, I guess the show writers wanted to find a way to keep a fan favourite around, no bad thing imo) to take back Myrcella, there's still a foiled plot by the sand snakes to take her and provoke war to avenge Oberyn though

Tyrion and Jorah is also somewhat off-book - Jorah doesn't get greyscale, but the kidnapping Tyrion to take him to Daenerys and regain her favour somehow happens. There's also some very significant characters in the books that Tyrion meets before being kidnapped that seem to be totally scrapped, I won't say anymore because they could still feature I suppose

King's Landing seems almost completely in line with the books aside from the usual cutting/amalgamation of some unnecessary characters and shortening of the overall plot, maybe i'm misremembering though

Arya's story is also similar to the books aside from the above

Dany's story is in this category too, although Barristan doesn't die in the books

The wall is completely on-book although I expect what happens to Sam and Gilly in the books to be cut for some reason

Brienne and Pod team up in the books aswell but they're off some other place unsuccessfully searching for Sansa (I think), they don't meet her and then watch over her like in the show

Am I missing anyone/anything? There's also a lot of content from locales and groups that we haven't seen in the show at all that appear to be cut

The first season did so well in following the boom precisely, I think.

As usual, however, Hollywood thinks it knows what is better than what the author wrote.

Fuck authors who compromise.

I think compromise was absolutely necessary in this case. You just cannot put every story line and every character into this series. Not possible. Each season would need to to be 30 episodes and the cast would be too large to manage. Not to mention people who haven't read the books would be swamped with ancillary characters. It's just not feasible.

In most cases I understand why they did certain things. Why it is Ellaria and the Sand Snakes and not Arienne and Aerys Oakheart who try and kidnap Myrcella, why Sansa is in Winterfell. All these things make sense in the light of trying to manage the number of branches in the storyline and still tell the same story.

Watched the last episode again and noticed Bronn was cut by one of the Sand Snakes - poisoned?
