"The Two Mrs. Carrolls" Watched it on TCM. I knew Bogart had played bad guys in other movies, but this was the first one I actually saw all the way through.  I love the second in the movie, when she realizes that he(Bogart's character) is trying to poison her.

Those are both great films. My five personal favorite Bogey films, in no particular order:

The Maltese Falcon (duh)

The Big Sleep (likewise duh)

Casablanca (nuff said)

The African Queen (maybe the best film he ever made)

We're No Angels (showed his gift for light comedy)

Damn it, I hate it when you agree with me. We are supposed to be "up vs down" " left vs right" "Ford vs Chevy".

In all seriousness, in my older age, I do find myself defaulting to older movies that rely on physical acting and facial expressions than graphics. Bogart hands down, was one of the best, if not, the best actor of all time.

Bogart's "Petrified Forest" was another one I like.

But as much as I love Key Largo, after two days ago, I have to say that "The Two Mrs Carrolls" is my favorite.

The best part of "Key Largo" was when Bogart's character had Rocky cornered on the boat with no way out.

Dwayne made the big movie to star in that one. I wonder if he was embarrassed by the low-rent CGI in the Mummy movie?

I can't help but notice a lack of Treasure of the Sierra Madre on either of your lists.

Not on mine, because I found it kind of heavy handed. Not a bad film, it just didn't crack my top five.

This week in the Deep Hurting Project: Krampus: The Reckoning. Not much of a prelude here, except to say that I only found out it was on Amazon Prime after Christmas, and I found myself wondering if I needed to watch the main Krampus movie this movie is clearly mockbustering. Since it's a Christmas movie and not on any of the three main streaming services, I worried that it wasn't available to watch. Fortunately, the local library kept a few copies in circulation. And, of course, all the time, I kept wondering if it was necessary, and for a few days, I decided maybe I didn't need to, especially since one of the only positive reviews on IMDb for the film came from the creative team and went out of its way to slag off the other one BEFORE IT WAS EVEN RELEASED. But then I decided, what the Hell, and picked it up at the library. It was a good, fun piece of misanthropic Christmas comedy. And this one? Well, let's see:
  • What's with all the pauses in this a capella rendition of "In the Bleak Midwinter"? It might have been a good rendition, but the pauses keep distracting me.
  • And why does the scene keep fading out randomly? You don't need to do that; just intercut between the credits and the scene.
  • What even is that commercial for?
  • So, you've got a problem with the kid (I don't even know how they're related) wandering out of her room at night, something so bad you installed a padlock on her door, and you leave the door ajar while you're screwing someone else with her in the house?
  • You ever watch the real Krampus movie and you at least get a chance of seeing why maybe it might be satisfying to see the Krampus kill all the members of this dysfunctional family? Good thing they don't bother with that.
  • Why is a Sam Elliot soundalike narrating this movie now?
  • She's clearly traumatised? She's talking like she's in a Bresson film!
  • Remember that huge smokestack behind the garden? That's our chimney where we incinerate the bodies of kids who ask too many questions and turn them into -- Fucking Hell, Zoe actually made that remark before I did.
  • What did she just do? There had to be some sort of effect behind what she was doing to startle him.
  • Tell me more about your scars? Well, let's see, My father was...a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So - me watching - he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it! Turns to me, and he says, "Why so serious, son?" Comes at me with the knife... "Why so serious?" He sticks the blade in my mouth... "Let's put a smile on that face!" And... why so serious?
  • Okay, so I'm watching this with the subtitles, as I usually do, and for whatever reason, the dialogue is so shit that even the subtitlers have no idea what they're even saying at times, just saying "mumbling." And somehow, I think one of those mumbles is "miss Happy Hour."
  • And why did they give us exposition on who Krampus is twice?
  • So, Zoe looks like a little girl, but is apparently 30? You know, the odd thing is I actually had a theater teacher who matched that description.
  • "The former foster child Zoe Weaver?"
  • Gee, a strange case of Deja Vu that only comes up about an hour into the movie.
  • How does this boatload of child porn connect to the Zoe Weaver case? I dunno, the script just says so.
  • And apparently, she doesn't even remember anything before she went into foster care. Gee, I wonder if this is setting up a nonsensical twist?
  • So, apparently Rachel and the doctor are long-lost sisters, and Rachel caused their parents to die in a fire because she summoned the Krampus. And Somehow, despite being a main character, she died in the crash. And so, she spontaneously and her adpoted son survives the operation he needed to have because she crashed her car with him in it even though it didn't make any sense for her to do so, and all evidence of Zoe after 1992 vanishes.
Well, that was needlessly confusing.

This week in the Deep Hurting Project: Caroline and the Magic Potion, a Spanish mockbuster of Coraline. I watched the original film recently, and so, now I'm ready to showcase what an insult to the original this movie is.
  • One of the first things you'll notice: they're trying to look like the stop-motion of Coraline, even though it's CGI and they're clearly not talented enough to pull off the look, but they try by simply lowering the framerate. Now, I tend to cringe at the sight of high frame rates, but making the rate this low  just erases the whole "illusion of images in motion" thing. And the fact that there's like five assets for everybody's mouth makes it look even cheaper.
  • Did they kill and pickle Kermit?
  • And why are snails singing a lawyer-friendly version of the Mission: Impossible theme? And why don't they understand the meaning of "quiet"?
  • CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE GET A COUPLE BOXES OF SALT FOR THESE SNAILS?
  • Why do these townspeople sound like rejects from Moral Orel?
  • Who the fuck is that guy who wants to get a hand on the flying potion formula? And why is the cat-stoat thing staring at the camera?
  • Damn, that's some precise landing on that parachute.
  • So, how old are these characters supposed to be? Because Caroline is most  likely a child, and her boyfriend looks like an adult.
  • And apparently, having the bluetooth knocked off a guy's ear is enough to turn someone into a zombie.
  • What even is pro-cellular fluid?
  • Rule of thumb: never try to do a maniacal laugh if you're not even capable of conveying emotion.
  • And why does she sound like a slightly higher-pitched version of Sandi from Daria?
  • What do you know? The snails are actually good for something: giving the ingredients for the potion.
  • And these interrogators are so useless they let Grandma call someone on her phone while she's supposed to be restrained.
  • Why are they playing polka... I mean poker?
  • Um, why are they bothering to torture Grandma? They want her formulas, they have mind control technology. Why don't they use it?
  • Are those butterflies flying straight into the roof of the factory?
  • So, what's the secret ingredients? Well, that's easy: two parts cesium, one part plutonic quartz, and 12 fl. oz of water. Crap, they're in Spain, so they don't know fluid ounces, do they?
  • And now they know to use their mind control tech on Grandma.
  • Hey, don't knock solitaire. I've been playing it every day for well over a decade.
  • You'd think that slug juice would have helped stick her to the floor and not make her slip, what with it hardening with contact with air. Also, how did the snails get into the factory and why are they still alive?
  • You know what, snails are now on my "burn it with fire" list, along with bees, ants, and crickets. And I don't think I've even seen a snail in real life.
  • Illegal Video Surveilance? Given the surveillance state that's encompassed the whole world, I have to know what the fuck is so bad that that's illegal. Besides video cameras in bathrooms. And even then, they had to pan away from the dog when it lifted its leg to pee.
  • Black liquorice is disgusting? Fuck you!
And because I managed to get a bargain bin copy of Vampires Suck at Half-Price Books, next week in the Deep Hurting Project is Breaking Wind Part One, a spiritual sequel of sports to that film made by the only spoof filmmaker who could rival Seltzerberg: Craig Moss. Maybe this will be the one that really shows how they manage to make Seltzerberg look good.

Saw Judas and the Black Messiah on Saturday, I thought it was really well-acted and believable; but bear in mind it's a dramatization. It's partly based on the PBS documentary Eyes on the Prize II where William O'Neal describes what it was like being an FBI informant in the Black Panthers and his role in the assassination of Fred Hampton on April 13, 1990; though he denied having drugged Hampton. O'Neal's death from running into traffic and getting hit by a car two days later was ruled a suicide, though his wife claims it was an accident, but the movie ends with O'Neal being relocated by the FBI.
