"Cultural Appropriation"
RE: "Cultural Appropriation"
That's an interesting point of view, but not at all what is being referred to when the term is employed.

What I find amusing, is that the description of cultural appropriation doesn't contain within it any commitment to shame. That's all that people seem to worry is being said, though. How many units of white guilt, how many acres, how many mules. What about royalty checks? Is it still cultural appropriation when blacks or natives do it?

All of these things, some other thing.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

That's what the term means in my culture.

Don't get too excited. I've only agreed that the far left has fascist elements.

The fringe is where the crazies live.  My problem is that fascism seems to be drifting from the fringes toward the center.  There are certain very oppressive views that are actually pretty common.

I really wish you''d stop misusing the word fascism.  It dilutes the brand.   Wink

Sure, authoritarianism is increasing on both sides, probably in relation to either the actual or perceived increase from "the other side".  That said, authoritarian right wing nationalism, fascism, is only moving towards the mainstream on the american right.  The american left is lukewarm-to-traitorous in their commitment to authoritarian left wing socialism. Buncha fuckin part time commies.

It's interesting that the snowflake term originated from convervatives/alt right--or whatever--but now the left is trying to steal it. I think it's because the left realized they're snowflakes. It's kind of like a closeted gay person using gay as an insult.

Is that why you think that's happening?  I think people are probably mocking them.  I guess it's 50-50 either way.   Angel

I think it's because the alt-right reveal themselves as snowflakes whenever they don't get their way.

About what? Like having opposing points of view speak at a university?

I don't disagree with you necessarily about someone having a dream catcher, but I can definitely see a difference. Nobody is trying to oppress (or at least really has the power to oppress) the Catholic population. The native culture is hanging on by a thread.

In the literal sense, I probably am misusing it.

But I'm trying to draw an analogy-- I think the left has stopped being a description of people with certain values, and become a nation of people who display certain membership tokens: fashions, catch words, and the smugness of knowing they are "right" without ever expecting to form a rational defense of their views. That's the analogy I'm trying to draw, and explicitly so.

There's a danger in assuming that nobody is gunning for Christians because when people do discriminate against Christians, people laugh at or don't believe it. It's the same thing with whites, especially white men, especially white straight men. People can say and do whatever they want towards white straight men because many people assume they are given everything and on top of everyone. Women can be sexist towards men and blacks can be racist towards whites and nobody cares.
