He's only gotten off so far because of a combination of early on lucking into some seriously talented (if criminal) underlings, being "too big to fail" when he failed and a bunch of NY politicians inexplicably throwing their lots in with him, including Cyrus Lance Vance. None of the three are applicable any more and he's floundering badly.
