Texas Tea Party Republican Chris Mapp’s bid to unseat Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has garnered attention not for his policy views, but for his use and defense of the anti-Latino slur “wetbacks” during a meeting with one of the state’s biggest newspapers.

The Huffington Post reported that the 53-year-old businessman used the term during an interview earlier this month with the editorial board of the Dallas Morning News, saying that “ranchers should be allowed to shoot on sight anyone illegally crossing the border on to their land.” He also reportedly referred to President Barack Obama as a “socialist son of a b*tch.”

Republican legislators in Idaho struck down a proposed law aimed at preventing the deaths of children whose parents eschew medical treatment in favor of prayer.

Democratic state Rep. John Gannon proposed the measure after the deaths of several children whose parents attend Followers of Christ churches in the state. Officials estimate that some 144 children are buried in a Followers of Christ cemetery overlooking the Snake River.

Republicans like Rep. Christy Perry fought Gannon’s bill on the grounds that forcing Followers of Christ parents to take their sick and injured children to the doctor would infringe upon their religious liberty.

“This is about religious beliefs, the belief God is in charge of whether they live, and God is in charge of whether they die,” Perry said earlier this year. “This is about where they go for eternity.”

Since atheism doesn't have a core of shared values, aside from reason and skepticism, I have no idea what such a party would be. There are atheists who span the political spectrum. In any case, an atheist party is a non-starter and would be less welcome than a New Kids on the Block reunion tour.

However, your earlier question about why liberal Christians aren't as aggressive in pushing their agenda as conservative Christians is a good one. I don't know the answer. Perhaps they aren't as motivated because they don't self-generate the constant state of crisis and sense of persecution that their conservative counterparts do.

Rather than waste time and resources tilting at windmills -- as an atheist party would be -- I suggest that we secular folk (the liberals and progressives among us in this case) be more aggressive in lining up with more liberal religious people who may share our long term goals. After all, the civil rights movement was composed of a variety of people, from Christians to liberals to communists.

As a matter of intellectual integrity, I oppose Christianity across the board. However, as a matter of practical politics and expediency, I am prepared to do what is necessary to advance important interests. And if, along the way, common cause between secular people and more liberal religionists can be used to drive a fatal wedge between the conservative and liberal wings of Christianity, Islam, etc. so much the better.
