This means they are essentially a government service. Marriage is likewise, a government service. If churches want to refuse to marry gay people, they should start paying taxes and stop participating in the legal binding of marriage relationships (i.e. participate only in ceremony where the pastor has no legal power to officiate a legal union) .
you don't know how churches work/are funded do you? Hint: It's not by the government. The reason Churches are not taxed is because they offer benevolence/programs to the community that the government does not have to. The only time government money is spent by the church is when the government offers food assistance to established church pantries/food give away programs, and in doing so their are a lot of federal regulations and mandates on said food, which is why most churches will not accept it.
That said I am not opposed to churches paying taxes. Render unto ceasar and all of that.
I didn't say they were funded by the government. I said they receive tax relief from the government, and they do. As long as they're getting that relief and performing marriages with government authority, they should have to marry whoever the government tells them to.
I was a fucking preacher's kid, bro. I know exactly how churches are funded.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)
