Well as I've already said it's a proper peer reviewed paper, and the data they drew on is from SHARE, therefore they are not in control of what questions to ask, and as a survey there can't be a "control group". You can only have a control group with a controlled study, and for that you need to direct people what activities they are to do and not to do.
