You hit the nail on the head here Thena. I was always confused about my grandpa saying horrible things about "black people", and yet he is always the first person to either strike up a conversation or help anyone, even if he just met them. Not walking the talk, thankfully. Then, and this was just the other day, I realized that "black people" is just an idea that he has compartmentalized away from any actual black individual he has met. He has all of this evidence to the contrary, and still has this negative idea of "black people", and he's somehow able to keep his experience and his idea separate.
